Minecraft Cross-Platform Play Explained by Edition

Minecraft·January 24, 2025·6 min read

Minecraft is better with friends, but only when everyone can join the same world. Edition differences decide whether cross-platform play works.

Does Minecraft Support Cross-Platform Play?

Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Yes. All Minecraft Bedrock Edition versions support cross-platform play. On PC, choose Bedrock Edition rather than Java Edition. On console and mobile, Bedrock is usually listed simply as “Minecraft.”

Console players may still need the platform's paid online membership to use multiplayer.

Minecraft Java Edition

Minecraft Java Edition does not connect with Bedrock Edition by default, so standard Java players cannot normally play with mobile or console players.

Third-party tools can help. Plugins such as GeyserMC can let Bedrock players join compatible Java servers, though this requires server-side setup. HolyHosting clients can use our GeyserMC knowledge base guide or contact support for help.

Minecraft Education Edition

Minecraft Education Edition is separate from Bedrock and Java Edition, so it cannot connect with either one.

It does support multiplayer across Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and mobile, but only for students and teachers under the same organization and account setup. The official setup article is available here.

Legacy Console Editions

Older releases such as Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition and PS3 Edition do not support cross-platform play. These legacy editions have been discontinued and will not receive expanded multiplayer support.

The Short Answer

Minecraft is cross-platform when everyone uses Bedrock Edition. Java needs tools like GeyserMC, Education Edition stays within its own school environment, and legacy console versions are platform-locked.
