Minecraft and NFTs: Mojang's Official Position

Minecraft·July 21, 2022·5 min read

NFTs have appeared around Minecraft in several forms, from worlds and skins to server ideas built around blockchain-based rewards. That raised a direct question for players and server owners: does Minecraft support NFTs?

The short answer is no.

Mojang's NFT Policy

Minecraft's NFT policy announcement on Twitter

On 07/20/2022, Mojang published a blog about Minecraft and NFTs alongside changes to the Minecraft Usage Guidelines. The core point was that Minecraft should give all players access to the same functionality, while artificial scarcity conflicts with the spirit of the game.

Mojang specifically called out NFT uses connected to worlds, skins, and similar in-game content. The company also raised concerns about third-party NFT reliability and noted cases where NFT prices had been artificially or fraudulently inflated.

Because this topic can have legal consequences, Mojang's exact wording matters. Their statement says:

Blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods.

Why the Decision Fits Minecraft's History

Mojang's position on NFTs did not arrive out of nowhere. Longtime players may remember similar reasoning around the Minecraft End User License Agreement, often shortened to EULA.

At that time, some servers were pushing shops and paid advantages too far, which led Mojang to set clearer rules. The NFT situation followed a similar pattern: third-party projects were tying value, access, or scarcity to Minecraft-related content, so Mojang stepped in with an official stance.

Does Minecraft Support NFTs?

Minecraft does not support NFTs or blockchain integrations tied to its client, server applications, or in-game content. That applies to worlds, skins, persona items, and mods.

For players who like blockchain technology, Mojang's statement does not read as a broad attack on the concept itself. The issue is that NFTs do not align with Minecraft's current values around access, fairness, and shared functionality. Mojang also said it would continue watching how the technology develops, so the policy could be revisited later. For now, though, Minecraft and NFTs are firmly separated.
