Steve and Alex are no longer Minecraft's only default faces. Mojang added seven more built-in skins, giving players more character options without needing to upload a custom design.

The full lineup includes Sunny, Kai, Makena, Steve, Alex, Zuri, Efe, Ari, and Noor. Each skin has its own look, which helps players who normally use defaults find something that better represents them. It also makes new accounts feel less locked to the same two classic choices.
Mojang discussed the additions during Minecraft Live and later in the release blog. The company plans to use the seven new characters in promotional material alongside Steve and Alex, similar to how character-driven trailers have been used before.
Mojang also said the larger cast helps it shape its own Minecraft stories. That naturally invites speculation about Story Mode-style ideas, but no new chapter was confirmed in the source material.
Java Edition players can open the Minecraft Launcher, choose Skins, then select Use on the preferred default.
Bedrock Edition players should open the game, select Dressing Room, create a new character, and browse the available default options. The location is different, but the goal is the same: pick the default character you want before entering a world.
The change does not add blocks, mobs, or mechanics. It simply makes Minecraft's default cast more varied, and Steve and Alex finally have more company.
