The sword is still Minecraft's reliable problem solver, even with newer weapons competing for attention. In Minecraft 1.21, the right enchantments turn it from a basic melee tool into a durable, loot-friendly, mob-clearing staple.

Every Sword Enchantment in Minecraft 1.21

Sharpness

Sharpness is the broad damage option. It adds 1 extra damage at level I, then adds another 0.5 damage per level after that, up to level V. Because it works against nearly everything, it is usually the safest damage enchantment for a general-use sword.

Smite

Smite is specialized for undead enemies. Each level adds 2.5 damage against undead mobs, reaching a major bonus at level V. It is excellent for skeletons, zombies, wither skeletons, and similar targets, but less useful as an everyday enchantment.

Bane of Arthropods

Bane of Arthropods adds 2.5 damage per level against arthropod mobs. That includes enemies such as spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, and endermites. It hits hard in its niche, but that niche is small enough that most players skip it.

Fire Aspect

Fire Aspect sets targets on fire. Level I burns for 4 seconds, while level II burns for 8 seconds. It also cooks raw meat drops from applicable mobs, which is convenient if your sword doubles as a slightly dramatic kitchen tool.

Knockback

Knockback pushes enemies farther away, adding about 2.5 blocks of extra knockback per level. It can be helpful for breathing room, but it can also shove mobs, loot, or players exactly where you do not want them.

Looting improves mob drops. Common drops generally increase by 1 per enchantment level, while rare drop chances rise by 1% per level. For farming mob materials, Looting III is one of the most valuable sword enchantments available.

Unbreaking gives each use a chance not to consume durability. On average, each level roughly doubles the item's lifespan, making Unbreaking III a major durability upgrade for any sword you plan to keep.

Mending
