Minecraft 1.21 Spear Enchantments and Best Setup

The spear brings a classic weapon type into Minecraft 1.21, with versions for each resource tier and a combat style built around reach, movement, and impact. Below are the spear's compatible enchantments and the best general-purpose setup for players who want one weapon that handles most fights well.

Compatible Spear Enchantments

Sharpness

• Maximum Level: V

Sharpness increases general melee damage. Level 1 adds 1 damage, and each additional level adds 0.5 more damage, up to Sharpness V.

Smite

This setup gives the spear its strongest broad-use toolkit. Sharpness V provides reliable damage against most enemies, Fire Aspect II adds burning damage and cooked meat drops, Looting III improves rewards, and Unbreaking III plus Mending I keeps the weapon usable for much longer.

Lunge III is the defining spear enchantment. Its movement bonus improves mobility directly, but it can also raise damage indirectly through the spear's Charge attack. Charge deals more damage based on the player's speed and the enemy's speed.

By jumping and using a Lunge III spear, players can combine Jab and Charge to launch forward into a high-impact attack. Knockback II adds even more push after the hit, which can set up another lunge if positioning allows. It is not subtle, but subtlety rarely wins a spear duel.

The tradeoff is hunger. Lunge III consumes extra hunger when used, so strong food such as golden carrots becomes more valuable during long fights or travel-heavy encounters.
