Minecraft 1.21 Mace Enchantments and Best Build

Minecraft·April 9, 2024·13 min read

The mace gave Minecraft 1.21 a heavy new weapon, and its enchantments are built around that same theme: falling from dangerous heights and making the landing everyone else's problem. Below are all compatible mace enchantments, followed by the strongest general-purpose setup.

Every Mace Enchantment

Density

  • Maximum Level: V
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Mutually exclusive with Smite, Bane of Arthropods, and Breach

Density increases the mace's bonus damage from falling. The weapon normally gains extra damage for each block the player falls, and Density adds 1 more damage per fallen block for each enchantment level, up to level 5.

Smite

  • Maximum Level: V
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Mutually exclusive with Bane of Arthropods, Density, and Breach

Smite adds 2.5 damage against undead mobs per level. At level 5, that bonus reaches 12.5 damage per hit against targets such as zombies, skeletons, and the Wither.

Bane of Arthropods

  • Maximum Level: V
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Mutually exclusive with Smite, Density, and Breach

Bane of Arthropods works like a specialist damage enchantment for arthropod mobs. It adds 2.5 damage per level against spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, endermites, and bees, reaching level 5 at maximum.

Breach

  • Maximum Level: IV
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Mutually exclusive with Smite, Bane of Arthropods, and Density

Breach lets mace attacks ignore 15% of the target's armor per level. At level 4, that reaches 60% armor reduction, making it useful against heavily armored players or mobs.

Wind Burst

  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Mace exclusive

Wind Burst creates a Wind Charge-style burst after a successful mace hit. It knocks enemies back and launches the player upward, with the effect growing stronger by level. It does not cancel fall damage, so gravity still gets a vote.

Unbreaking

  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Unbreaking gives each use a chance not to consume durability. On average, each level adds roughly another full item's worth of lifespan, with level 3 as the cap.

Fire Aspect

  • Maximum Level: II
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Fire Aspect sets targets on fire for 4 seconds at level 1 and 8 seconds at level 2. Mobs that normally drop raw meat will drop the cooked version when killed while burning.

Mending

  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Mending consumes collected Experience Orbs to repair the enchanted item. The mace must be held in the main hand, off hand, or an equipped slot that can receive repairs.

Best Mace Enchantment Setup

  • Density V
  • Wind Burst III
  • Fire Aspect II
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending I

For most players, this is the strongest mace build. Density V is chosen over Breach because the mace's biggest strength is enormous fall-based damage, including the possibility of deleting major threats such as the Wither when the setup is right.

Wind Burst III is powerful, but it is also the one enchantment worth thinking twice about. Wind Charges in the off hand can give more controlled movement and can help manage fall damage more safely. If Wind Burst stays on the mace, Feather Falling IV boots become strongly recommended.

Final Notes

The mace is at its best when the player builds around vertical movement, timing, and durability. A fully enchanted mace can hit absurdly hard, but a missed landing still hurts. Minecraft 1.21 did not make gravity friendlier.
