Minecraft 1.21 Mace Crafting and Heavy Core Guide

The mace introduced in Minecraft 1.21 Tricky Trials is powerful, but its recipe is short only on paper. You need two items, and both are found through trial chamber progression.

2. Breeze Rod

Crafting the mace requires one heavy core and one breeze rod. Breeze rods come from breeze mobs, while heavy cores are rare rewards from ominous vaults. That means the first real task is finding a trial chamber.

Find a Trial Chamber

Trial chambers generate underground between layers -20 and -40. You can search by mining through those depths, but there is a cleaner option if luck is being rude. Cartographer villagers can sell trial chamber maps, which point to a nearby chamber.

Clear Trial Spawners and Collect Ominous Bottles

Once you reach the copper and tuff structure, prepare for combat before exploring. Trial chambers contain different room layouts, and many include trial spawners. Defeat every mob a spawner creates to receive its rewards.

One reward to watch for is the ominous bottle. You will need it later to turn normal trial spawners into ominous trial spawners. Ominous bottles have an 18.6% chance to drop.

Get a Breeze Rod

Breeze rods drop from breeze mobs, and the breeze has a 100% chance to drop one. To identify a breeze trial spawner, check the blocks around its base. Chiseled copper and chiseled tuff indicate that the spawner creates breezes.

Only one breeze rod is required for a mace, but clearing additional breeze spawners can still help if you need more ominous bottles.

Create a Trial Omen

The heavy core comes from ominous vaults, and opening one requires an ominous trial key. To start that process, drink an ominous bottle while inside or near a trial chamber. This applies Bad Omen, which then becomes Trial Omen.

With Trial Omen active, trial spawners can become ominous trial spawners. These harder spawners have a chance to reward ominous trial keys. Expect a tougher fight, including empowered enemies and plenty of hostile projectiles and potions.

Open Ominous Vaults

After getting an ominous trial key, find an ominous vault and use the key on it. This is where patience becomes part of the recipe. Heavy cores have an 8.3% chance to drop, so it may take around 12 ominous vaults on average before one appears.

Because each trial chamber contains only a limited number of ominous vaults, you may need to search for another chamber.

Craft the Mace

Once you have the heavy core and breeze rod, the mace can be crafted directly in your inventory. Place the heavy core anywhere in the top row, then place the breeze rod directly beneath it. The mace is complete, and gravity is now a combat mechanic.
