Minecraft 1.21 Bow Enchantments: Best Setup and What Each One Does

Minecraft·August 2, 2024·10 min read

A bow is one of Minecraft's safest damage tools, provided the arrows go somewhere near the target. In Minecraft 1.21, the best bow combines damage, utility, durability, and long-term repair value.

Every Bow Enchantment in Minecraft 1.21

Power

  • Maximum Level: V
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Bow only

Power increases arrow damage. Level I adds 50% extra damage, and each additional level adds another 25%, up to Power V.

Flame

  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Bow only. Rain cancels the fire effect

Flame sets targets on fire for 5 seconds, dealing 5 fire damage if the target is not protected or extinguished.

Punch

  • Maximum Level: II
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Bow only

Punch increases arrow knockback by about 3 blocks per level. At Punch II, it is especially useful for keeping mobs away or sending players into awkward places.

Infinity

  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Bow only. Incompatible with Mending

Infinity prevents normal arrows from being consumed when fired. The player still needs at least one arrow in the inventory, and the effect does not cover tipped or spectral arrows.

Unbreaking

  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Unbreaking gives each durability use a chance not to consume durability. On average, each level greatly extends the bow's lifespan, with level III being the best option.

Mending

  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Incompatible with Infinity

Mending uses collected experience orbs to repair the enchanted item. For a bow, the item must be held in the main hand or off hand for the repair effect to apply.

Best Bow Enchantment Setup

  • Power V
  • Flame I
  • Punch II
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending I

This setup gives the bow maximum damage, fire utility, knockback, better durability, and reliable repairs. It uses Mending instead of Infinity because a bow can eventually become too expensive to repair on an anvil.

Infinity is convenient for basic arrows, but arrows are easy to farm, trade for, or craft. Since Infinity does not preserve tipped or spectral arrows, its value falls off once special ammunition enters the picture. Mending keeps the bow useful indefinitely, which makes it the stronger long-term choice for most players.
