Minecraft cow variety is expanding in 1.21.5, following the same idea introduced for pigs in snapshot 25w02a. The new system gives cows biome-based looks, while mooshrooms remain their strange mushroom-island relatives.

Cold cows have light brown fur and dark horns that point forward. They spawn in colder or windier overworld biomes, including taiga variants and windswept hill regions.
Their design has not been officially tied to a real breed, but the closest comparison is likely Highland Cattle from Scotland. The shaggy light-brown coat makes the connection easy to see, even if Minecraft wisely avoids making players brush it.

Warm cows use reddish-brown fur and dark horns that curve upward. They appear in hotter biomes such as savannas, jungles, and badlands.
The look may be inspired by Ankole cattle, a real-world African breed known for reddish-brown coats and large upward-facing horns. That inspiration is not confirmed, but the visual match is hard to miss.

Temperate cows are the classic Minecraft cow design: dark brown fur, white patches, and smaller dark horns. As of Minecraft Snapshot 25w05a, they spawn in forest, flower forest, birch forest, old-growth birch forest, dark forest, and swamp biomes.
Their real-world equivalent is less obvious. Some players compare them to Maine-Anjou cattle because of the similar dark-and-white patterning, though that remains speculation rather than an official reference.

Red mooshrooms are cow variants found only in the rare Mushroom Fields biome. These islands generate with mycelium and giant mushrooms, making them one of the more unusual overworld environments.
Because red mooshrooms are more fantasy creature than farm animal, they do not have a direct real-world cow counterpart. Their mushroom-covered design may loosely echo fungi such as cordyceps.

Brown mooshrooms do not naturally spawn, even in Mushroom Fields. To get one, lightning must strike a red mooshroom. They can also appear very rarely when two red mooshrooms breed.
