How to Install and Play Ice and Fire: Dragons in Minecraft

Minecraft·May 20, 2026·26 min read

Overview

The Ender Dragon is the usual final boss in vanilla Minecraft, but many players eventually want something bigger, stranger, and ideally tameable. Ice and Fire: Dragons fills that gap by adding dangerous dragons, fantasy creatures, new structures, useful loot, and plenty of reasons to watch the sky.

This mod is not only about fighting dragons. You can find cyclopes on the coast, pixies in the forest, trolls underground, Gorgons hidden below temples, and dragon skeletons scattered across certain biomes. Some creatures can be tamed, some can be hunted, and some should be treated with the same caution as a creeper in a storage room.

Ice and Fire: Dragons has been downloaded millions of times and supports Minecraft versions from 1.10.2 through 1.16.5, depending on the file you choose. It was created by sbom_xela and javaraptor, with TheBv_ contributing to the project.

Download the Mod

  • Open the Ice and Fire: Dragons page on CurseForge.
  • Select Files near the top of the page.
  • Find the Minecraft version you plan to run.
  • Click the download button for that file.
  • Save the `.jar` somewhere easy to find.

Required Dependencies

Ice and Fire needs a dependency mod, and the correct one depends on your Minecraft version:

  • Minecraft 1.12.2 and older: LLibrary
  • Minecraft 1.15.2 and newer: Citadel

Download the matching dependency from CurseForge and keep it with the main Ice and Fire `.jar`. The server and every player joining it must use the same mod versions.

Install Ice and Fire on a Server

Before uploading anything, confirm the server is running the same Forge version as the Ice and Fire file you downloaded.

  • Open your HolyHosting server panel and stop the server.
  • Find the game file or version selector.
  • Set the server to the matching Forge version.
  • Open your server files through the file manager or FTP access.
  • Locate the `mods` folder, or create one if it does not exist.
  • Upload Ice and Fire plus its required dependency into the `mods` folder.
  • Wait until every file finishes uploading.
  • Return to the main server page and start the server again.

If the server fails to start, check that the mod, dependency, Minecraft version, and Forge version all match.

Install the Mod on Your Client

Players also need the mod installed locally. A Forge server will reject clients that do not have the required mods loaded.

  • Install the matching Forge version on your Minecraft launcher.
  • Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Installations.
  • Hover over the Forge profile, then open its folder.
  • Find or create the `mods` folder.
  • Place the Ice and Fire `.jar` and dependency `.jar` inside it.
  • Launch Minecraft using the Forge profile.

Once the client and server have the same files, you can join and start exploring the new content.

What Changes in the World

Ice and Fire adds new structures across the Overworld. Many of them contain loot, danger, or both. Usually both.

Dragon Skeletons

Dragon skeletons can appear in deserts and cold biomes. Right-click them with an empty hand to collect dragon bones, which are used for several tools and weapons added by the mod.

Gorgon Temples

Broken stone temples may generate near beaches. They can look empty at first, but a nearby lever opens stairs to a lower chamber. That chamber may contain a Gorgon, so do not walk in staring at everything like a tourist.

Mausoleums

Cold biomes can contain dark mausoleum structures. These require a special key to open and may reward players with valuable items once unlocked.

Cyclops Coves

Cyclops coves are coastal structures with gold, chests, sheep, and a cyclops guarding the area. The loot is tempting, but the owner is not known for hospitality.

Dragon Roosts

Dragon roosts appear in many normal Overworld biomes. Ice dragon roosts are found in colder areas, while fire dragon roosts appear in many other biomes. They often contain gold and chests, but they can also contain multiple dragons. Prepare armor, ranged weapons, food, and an escape route before approaching.

New Mobs to Watch For

The mod adds many creatures, and several of them are hostile by default.

Pixies

Pixies spawn in pixie villages and are easy to recognize because of their glowing particles. They are peaceful, but they may steal items when you are not paying attention. Dropping cake nearby can tame them, letting them follow you and provide a status effect.

Hippogryphs

Hippogryphs are neutral flying creatures found in multiple colors depending on the biome. They usually attack only when provoked, but hungry ones may hunt nearby mobs. Drop rabbit feet near one to tame it, then equip it with a saddle and chest.

Trolls

Trolls live underground and are often spotted by their glowing eyes. Once they notice a player, they roar and charge for heavy damage. Sunlight turns them to stone, which is useful if you can survive long enough to make that matter. Their weapons are valuable drops.

Sea Serpents

Sea serpents control sections of ocean and attack anything that enters their territory. They bite at close range, fire boiling water at distant targets, and can leap from the water before crashing down for major damage.

Gorgons

Gorgons hide beneath beach temples. Looking directly at one can instantly turn you to stone and destroy your armor. A blindfold protects against petrification, but it also makes the fight harder because the Gorgon becomes more aggressive and can inflict poison. Defeating one may drop a Gorgon Head, which can petrify other mobs.

Cyclopes

Cyclopes spawn in coves and may wander elsewhere. They attack most nearby mobs with stomps, kicks, bites, and heavy knockback. Sheep Disguise armor can help players sneak closer without being detected immediately.

Dragons

Dragons are the center of the mod. They fly, bite, use elemental breath attacks, and become stronger as they grow. Adult dragons are extremely dangerous, but obtaining an egg lets you hatch and tame a dragon of your own. Raising one takes effort, but the reward is a powerful mount and companion.

Common Problems

Minecraft crashes or shows an error on launch: Check that Forge, Ice and Fire, and the dependency mod all match the same Minecraft version. Missing Citadel or LLibrary files are a common cause.

The server rejects your connection: Make sure the same mod files are installed on both the server and your client. Also confirm you launched Minecraft through the correct Forge profile.

The server starts, but modded items are missing: The mod may not be loaded on the server. Confirm the `.jar` files are directly inside the `mods` folder, then restart the server.
