Vanilla Minecraft is great, but sometimes punching trees and arguing with creepers needs a little more machinery, magic, and mystery. FTB HermitPack keeps the familiar Minecraft feel while adding new mobs, extra resources, improved villages, stronger tools, technology, and magical progression.
HermitPack is a Feed The Beast modpack originally released for Minecraft Forge 1.10.2. It became well known through Minecraft creators and streamers, and its main goal is simple: survive in a mostly recognizable world with many more systems layered on top. You can build machines, experiment with magic, explore upgraded caves, collect rare minerals, and craft better gear with friends on the same server.
This guide explains how to install FTB HermitPack on your computer, set it up on a HolyHosting Minecraft server, and get started once you join.
Before joining a HermitPack server, every player needs the same modpack installed locally. The official FTB App is the easiest way to do this.

If Minecraft closes or freezes during startup, try allocating more memory in the launcher settings. Modpacks are not exactly known for being shy about RAM.
HermitPack changes many server files, so using a fresh server profile or clean directory is strongly recommended. This helps prevent older world files, plugins, or mod data from causing conflicts. It is not always required, but it is the cleaner option.

Make sure the server and client are using the same HermitPack version. Version mismatches are one of the most common causes of failed joins.

When you first connect, chat may show a team request. Joining the same team as your friends helps prevent friendly fire, which is useful unless your group considers accidental axe fights a feature.
The world will still look close to normal Minecraft in many places. Biomes, terrain, and structures are recognizable, but you will notice enhanced villages, new mobs, extra ores, and more loot options. Open your inventory and you should also see JEI on the right side. JEI lets you search items and view recipes, making it one of the most useful tools in the entire pack.
You also start with several guide items, including Materials & You, OpenComputers Manual, Digital Guide, and The One Probe. The first three are books or manuals that explain major systems in the pack. The One Probe controls the information tooltip shown when looking at blocks, entities, and machines.

Keep these items around. They are easy to ignore at first, but they save a lot of guessing once you begin crafting machines, tools, and special blocks.

Tinkers' Construct is one of the first major mods you should learn in HermitPack. It allows you to build custom tools and weapons from separate parts instead of relying only on standard Minecraft crafting.
Start by crafting these stations:
Blank Patterns are used to create tool part patterns, which then let you make pieces such as heads, bindings, rods, and blades. After creating the parts, combine them in the Tool Station to make your finished item. The Materials & You book explains the system in more detail, including material traits and better tool combinations.
Hostile mobs in HermitPack can spawn with armor, weapons, or other randomized gear. Some enemies are only a little stronger than normal, while others can hit much harder than expected. Early fights are a good way to collect useful drops, but running in with no armor is a quick lesson in optimism.

You may also find new creatures in the Overworld, including owls at night. The extra mobs help the world feel different without completely replacing the normal Minecraft experience.

Mining is much more rewarding in HermitPack. Some cave systems, especially deeper ones near bedrock, contain large amounts of valuable ore. These areas can include diamonds, emeralds, and many modded resources, making them excellent places to gather materials for tools, armor, machines, and magic.

HermitPack adds many ores beyond standard Minecraft resources. You may find Osmium, Silver, Galena, Tin, Copper, Uranium, and more. Some are common, while others take more searching. Save unfamiliar minerals instead of throwing them away, because many become important later for machines, components, advanced tools, or special recipes.
Villagers may also offer useful trades for modded materials, so mining is not the only path forward.
Villages remain mostly familiar, but HermitPack adds extra buildings and new villager types. Some NPCs may offer valuable trades, including emerald deals, unusual planks, tools, wrenches, and other modded items.

Finding a village early can make the opening hours much easier. If you are creating a new world, a seed with nearby villages can speed up progression by giving players access to shelter, food, trades, and loot chests.

Dungeons, mineshafts, Nether fortresses, and other structures can contain powerful loot. Rewards vary widely, from magical items to portable storage and utility tools.
One useful example is the Ender Wing Prime, which can teleport a player back to their bed spawn point. Another is the Heart Container, which permanently increases your health. There is a limit to how many extra hearts you can gain, but even a few can make dangerous exploration much safer.
Exploring structures is worth the risk, especially once you have basic armor and a reliable weapon.
Industrial Craft 2 becomes more important as your world develops. It lets players build machines that generate and use power for automation, item handling, farming support, processing resources, and other advanced projects.

Many machines require Rubber, metal components, and modded resources. You can collect these through mining, village trades, loot chests, and crafting chains. Later tools, such as the Mining Laser, can make resource collection far faster once you have the infrastructure to support them.

HermitPack is not only about technology. Blood Magic adds rituals, special tools, strong weapons, armor, and transformation-based items. Some rituals can dramatically affect the world, including changing the time or creating lightning effects.
Magic and machines can be used separately, but combining both gives players more options. One player can focus on automation while another studies rituals, then everyone benefits from the results.
Confirm that every player is using the correct server address, including the port if one is required. Then check that everyone installed the same FTB HermitPack version as the server. If one player can join and another cannot, the issue is usually client-side. If nobody can join, review the server console for startup errors.
Check that HermitPack is selected in your panel's version dropdown, then restart the server. If the server was previously running another modpack or vanilla world, old files may be interfering. A fresh server profile or clean directory usually fixes this. For client problems, reinstall the pack in the FTB App or allocate more memory.
Modded servers can lag when too many machines, entities, chunk loaders, or world-generation tasks are active. Reduce unnecessary loaded chunks, review server settings, avoid excessive mob farms, and consider performance-focused mods when compatible with the pack version. More memory can help, but good world management matters too.
