How to Install and Play the Amnesia Modpack on a Minecraft Server

Amnesia turns Minecraft survival into a slow argument with your own memory. Blocks, items, mobs, and drops can become unfamiliar over time, making even basic tasks feel unstable. A texture may vanish, a familiar resource may stop making sense, and mining the wrong thing can suddenly feel like a career choice.

The modpack was created by Kehaan for Minecraft 1.12.2 and contains about 80 mods. It is relatively small compared with many large packs, but its central idea has a large impact: your character gradually forgets how Minecraft works. Strange terrain, missing textures, unusual structures, custom mobs, and memory-based progression all build around that theme.

Install Amnesia on Your Computer

Before joining a server, every player needs the same modpack installed locally. CurseForge is the simplest route for most players.

  1. Go to CurseForge and download the launcher for your operating system.
  1. Run the installer and open the launcher once installation finishes.
  1. Select Browse Modpacks from the Minecraft section.
  1. Search for Amnesia, then choose Install on the modpack page.
  1. After the files finish downloading, open My Modpacks and press Play to confirm the pack launches correctly.

Install Amnesia on a Server

To run Amnesia in multiplayer, the server must use the matching modpack version. In the HolyHosting control panel, choose the correct server profile before changing anything.

  1. Open your server panel and find the Game File or version selector.
  1. Open the current selection to bring up the available server types.
  1. Search for Amnesia, select it, then continue with the version change.
  1. When prompted, generate a new world and restart the server so the modpack can load cleanly.
  1. Once the server is online, connect using the CurseForge launcher profile that has Amnesia installed.

A fresh world is strongly recommended. Existing worlds will not contain the modpack's custom generation in already-created chunks.

First Moments in the World

After joining, the pack's changes appear quickly. Your inventory contains starter items, the terrain may look unusual, and nearby mobs or structures may not behave like standard Minecraft. The starting tools are not just decoration, so keep them nearby while learning the pack.

One early item is the bed mob. Shift and right-click to place it, or right-click normally to sleep. If it has been placed, feeding it white wool lets it rest. Losing it is inconvenient, since replacing it is harder than crafting a regular bed.

Advancements are also important in Amnesia. They point you toward new tasks and can reward progress, from basic crafting goals to machines and dimension-related objectives.

Odd World Generation

Amnesia often makes the world feel incorrectly assembled, which is the point. Floating islands, biome oddities, End blocks, strange ore clusters, and custom mobs can appear in the Overworld. Some formations are useful for gathering resources from places you would normally reach much later.

These areas can also make strong base locations. A floating patch of unusual blocks may be risky to reach, but it can provide rare materials before the normal progression path would allow it.

Structures Worth Searching

Custom generation includes more than terrain. Partial Nether fortresses, crash sites, and End-style towers can appear while exploring. Some contain loot, while others are mostly valuable because of the blocks they are made from.

Broken fortress sections may include missing or unfamiliar blocks if your memory has started fading. The biome usually does not matter much, so keep watch while traveling.

Impact sites can leave behind scattered debris and useful materials. Sometimes they are loaded with resources, and sometimes they are mostly dramatic landscaping. Minecraft has always enjoyed making miners negotiate with disappointment.

End towers may also generate in the Overworld, complete with crystals at the top. These are less common than many other structures, but finding one can give your group an early advantage.

How Memory Loss Works

The core Amnesia mechanic is forgetting. As you play, blocks may stop dropping their expected items, item appearances can become unrecognizable, and familiar materials may no longer display properly. This is intentional behavior, not a broken texture pack.

The effect creates pressure during normal survival. Mining, crafting, sorting storage, and identifying equipment all become harder when the game no longer clearly tells you what you are holding. Multiplayer makes this more interesting because players may forget different things at different times. One person might recognize an item while another sees nonsense, so labeling chests and communicating discoveries helps more than usual.

Remembering Again

Memory loss can be delayed with an Extend Amnesia item. Using one gives you roughly five more minutes before more knowledge is forgotten, which makes a stack of them valuable for longer expeditions or group projects.

The recipe uses seven Blocks of Memories and two Nether Stars. Nether Stars still require Wither fights, while memory blocks can come from advancement rewards or mining around y-levels 0 to 32.

Reaching the Aether

Amnesia includes additional dimensions, including the Aether. To build the Aether portal, place glowstone in the same frame shape used for a Nether portal, then activate it with water instead of flint and steel.

The Aether contains its own mobs, resources, and risks. Use the advancement book to track dimension goals, since not every world is reached through the same method. Bring spare food, blocks, and a way back before entering any new dimension. Amnesia rewards curiosity, but it is less charming when curiosity strands everyone far from their supplies.

Other Features to Watch For

Chance Cubes can spawn underground and trigger random events when broken. The result might be helpful, dangerous, strange, or all three in quick succession. Herobrine can also appear as the world becomes less reliable, adding another threat while players are already trying to understand what they forgot.

Because Amnesia includes many smaller systems, exploration is the best teacher. Keep backups, share discoveries with other players, and avoid testing mystery blocks beside anything important.

Common Problems

Unable to join the server: Make sure the client and server are both running the Amnesia modpack. After selecting the pack on the server, restart from the control panel so the change fully applies. If the pack is correct, confirm you are using the right server address or subdomain.

The world looks vanilla: Generate a new world after installing the modpack. Old worlds cannot retroactively add custom structures and terrain to areas that already exist. If a new world still fails to load modded content, stop the server, remove the regenerated modpack folders such as `mods`, `config`, and `jar` through file access, then restart so the server can rebuild them. Also confirm the server finished startup before joining, since large modpacks can appear unavailable while the first launch is still preparing files.
