Minecraft has plenty of creatures to fight, tame, avoid, or accidentally annoy. The problem is that the game does not show exact health values for most entities, so combat can involve a lot of guessing. The Neat mod fixes this by adding clean health bars above mobs, players, and bosses.
Neat works with Forge and Fabric, and it is a client-side mod. That means it belongs in your Minecraft launcher files, not on the server. Once installed, it displays HP bars in singleplayer and multiplayer without requiring everyone else to install it too.
Its behavior is controlled through a local configuration file, where you can change things like health bar size, height, visibility rules, and render distance. This guide explains how to download Neat, install it, adjust its settings, and fix the most common problems.

Before installing Neat, make sure your Minecraft Launcher already has a Forge or Fabric profile for the same Minecraft version as the file you downloaded. A 1.19.2 mod file, for example, needs a 1.19.2 modded profile.

After Minecraft loads, health bars should appear above passive mobs, hostile mobs, players, and bosses such as the Wither or Ender Dragon. This makes it easier to judge whether to finish a fight, back away, or accept that the skeleton had better aim than expected.
The default settings work well for many players, but the display can be adjusted. If the bars are too large, appear from too far away, or show too often, the configuration file is where those changes are made.
Neat stores its client settings in a `.toml` file inside your Minecraft profile files. Use a proper text editor such as Notepad++ or another plain-text editor so the formatting stays intact.

Neat includes several options, so the best setup depends on how much information you want on-screen. If the health bars feel too big during fights with many mobs, reduce the bar size or tweak the display height.

Smaller bars are helpful in mob farms, caves, raids, and other crowded areas where dozens of health counters can clutter the screen. Try small adjustments first, then reload the game and test again.
Another popular setup is showing health bars only when you are looking at an entity or when that entity has taken damage. This keeps the world cleaner while still giving useful combat information when it matters.

These visibility options are also useful for PvP because they reduce unnecessary mob information while keeping player health details easier to track. You can combine multiple settings, so do not treat the first edit as permanent.
Check that the mod file is inside the correct `mods` folder for the launcher profile you are using. Also confirm that Forge or Fabric is installed and that the Minecraft version matches the Neat file. If the game crashes on startup, a version mismatch is one of the first things to check.
If the profile is old or damaged, reinstalling the Forge or Fabric profile can also help. After reinstalling, place the Neat file back into the new profile's `mods` folder.
Close Minecraft before editing `neat-client.toml`. If the game is still running, it may replace your edits when it shuts down.
Also check the formatting of any value you changed. Boolean settings usually need lowercase `true` or `false`, with no extra capitalization or typos. Save the file in your text editor, reopen it once to confirm the change remained, then start Minecraft.
