How to Summon and Defeat the Wither in Minecraft

Minecraft·February 19, 2022·10 min read

The Wither is Minecraft's summonable boss, built from Nether materials and several poor decisions placed in a T shape. Unlike the Ender Dragon, it does not wait in its own dimension. Players create it themselves, then immediately have to deal with the consequences.

Gather the Materials

To summon the Wither, you need four blocks of Soul Soil or Soul Sand, plus three Wither Skeleton Skulls.

Soul Sand and Soul Soil are common in several Nether biomes. The skulls are the difficult part. Wither skeletons spawn in nether fortresses, and each one has a low chance to drop a skull when killed. They are dangerous enemies on their own, so bring good armor and enough food before farming them.

The base drop chance is 2.5%. Looting helps, though not enough to make the grind disappear. Looting III raises the chance to 5.5% in Java Edition and 8.5% in Bedrock Edition. Expect to fight quite a few wither skeletons before all three skulls drop.

Prepare for the Fight

This guide assumes a direct fight in an open battlefield rather than an automated farm or cheese strategy. The battlefield is yours before the Wither exists, so choose it carefully. Avoid building the Wither near bases, farms, storage rooms, or anything else you would prefer not to see converted into rubble.

The Wither has two main phases, so bring gear for both ranged and melee combat.

During phase one, the Wither flies and fires explosive wither skulls. A strong enchanted bow or crossbow is the best weapon here. Good aim matters because the Wither moves and heals passively throughout the fight.

During phase two, the Wither becomes immune to arrows and tridents, then moves closer for melee combat. Switch to a diamond or netherite sword or axe. Smite V is especially strong against the Wither and outperforms Sharpness V for this fight.

For defense, use diamond or netherite armor with a balanced mix of Protection and Blast Protection. Obsidian bunkers and more advanced automated kill farms are possible, but a direct fight still depends heavily on armor, healing, and movement.

Bring food, golden apples, Healing potions, and milk. Milk removes the wither status effect, which can otherwise drain health quickly. Keep in mind that milk also removes helpful potion effects, so use it when the wither effect is the bigger problem.

Java vs. Bedrock Difficulty

Bedrock Edition players should prepare for a harder fight. The Wither has additional behaviors and is generally more dangerous than its Java Edition version. If playing on Bedrock, bring more supplies than you think you need. Then bring a little more, because the Wither is rude like that.

Build the Wither

Place the soul sand or soul soil in a T shape: one vertical column two blocks tall with three blocks across the top. Place the three wither skeleton skulls on top of the horizontal row. The final skull completes the structure and starts the summoning sequence.

The Wither spawns when the final skull is placed, so do not finish the structure until the arena is ready and you are at a safe distance.

Phase One: Ranged Combat

When the Wither appears, it charges briefly, then explodes. Use that time to back away and ready your ranged weapon.

After the explosion, the Wither begins flying and firing skulls. Keep moving, dodge the blasts, and shoot it until it reaches 50% health. The terrain will take damage during this phase, so choose a battlefield where explosions will not destroy anything important. Open space helps you see incoming skulls, but it also gives the Wither room to move, so stay alert.

In Bedrock Edition, phase one is more dangerous. The Wither moves more aggressively, fires stronger blue skulls more often, and darkens the world until it dies. That darkness can also stop normal mobs from burning during the day.

Phase Two: Melee Combat

At half health, the Wither gains wither armor and becomes immune to ranged attacks. In Java Edition, the fight shifts into close combat until it dies. Use your Smite weapon, keep healing available, and watch for skull explosions at close range. This is where the preparation matters most, because arrows and tridents stop solving the problem.

In Bedrock Edition, phase two starts with another explosion and spawns four wither skeletons. The Wither also dashes at the player, destroying blocks in its path, and fires bursts of skulls at close range. Clear skeletons quickly if they become a problem, then focus the Wither down.

Claim the Loot

When the Wither dies, it drops 50 levels of experience and a Nether Star. The Nether Star is used to craft a beacon, which is the main reason players summon the Wither in the first place.
