How to Start Ominous Trial Chambers in Minecraft 1.21

Trial chambers are exciting the first time through, but prepared players can clear the standard version quickly. Minecraft 1.21 includes a tougher variant for anyone who wants better rewards and a little more chaos dropping from the ceiling.

Step 1: Locate a Trial Chamber

The longest part of the process is usually finding the structure. Trial chambers generate underground in the Overworld between layers -20 and -40, with no surface marker pointing directly to them. Most players find one through caving, branch mining, or plain old stubborn digging.

There is a cleaner option if emeralds are available. A cartographer villager can sell a trial explorer map, which points to a nearby trial chamber and saves a lot of wandering through stone.

Step 2: Get Ominous Bottles

To turn a normal trial chamber into its harder version, collect ominous bottles first. A straightforward method is to explore a trial chamber, earn trial keys, and open vaults. According to the ominous bottle page, vaults have an ominous bottle drop rate of around 18.6%, so finding one should not require an expedition worthy of a documentary.

Trial Omen is the signal that the harder version is active. Nearby regular trial spawners can become ominous trial spawners, creating tougher encounters and adding extra hazards. Expect stronger mobs, projectiles, and potions that can appear from above.
