How to Set Up and Play a StoneBlock Minecraft Server

Minecraft·May 20, 2026·19 min read

What Is StoneBlock?

StoneBlock is a Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack built around a simple but strange idea: instead of surviving on an island in the sky, you begin buried inside stone. Progress comes from punching, hammering, crafting, and slowly turning a solid cave into a working base. It is a heavier pack with over 200 mods, so expect automation, quests, resources, and plenty of tunnel digging.

The pack was created by Sunekaer, with contributions from knoxhack and ロ_ロ, and has earned millions of downloads. If SkyBlock feels too open and breezy, StoneBlock politely removes the sky.

Installing StoneBlock on the Server

  1. Open your server panel.
  2. Find the JAR/version selector in your panel.
  3. Search for `StoneBlock` in the version list.
  1. Select StoneBlock and apply the version change.
  2. When prompted, create a new world. This helps avoid conflicts with an old vanilla or modded world.
  3. Restart the server so the modpack can load.

Set the Level Type

StoneBlock needs the correct world generation setting before players begin. Without it, the world may not generate as expected.

  1. In the server panel, open your configuration file section.
  2. Go to your server settings.
  3. Find Level Type and set it to `voidworld`.
  1. Save the settings.
  2. Generate a new world when prompted.
  3. Restart the server again.

Installing StoneBlock on Your Computer

Every player joining the server needs the same StoneBlock modpack installed locally.

  1. Download and install the CurseForge launcher.
  2. Open the launcher and go to Browse Modpacks.
  3. Search for `StoneBlock`.
  4. Select the pack named StoneBlock, then press Install.
  5. Once installation finishes, open My Modpacks.
  1. Press Play to launch Minecraft with StoneBlock enabled.

First Steps in StoneBlock

When you spawn, you will be surrounded by stone and given a quest book. Keep that book handy, since it explains progression and rewards. Losing it immediately is technically possible, but it is not a strong opening move.

Start With Pebbles

Punch stone with an empty hand to collect stone pebbles. Completing the first quest gives you a loot chest, which can help speed up the early game.

Make a Crafting Table

Collect 16 pebbles, then open your crafting grid. Place 4 pebbles together to make cobblestone. After that, place cobblestone in the same 2x2 pattern to craft a stone crafting table.

Craft a Hammer and Make Dirt

Use the crafting table to turn 4 cobblestone into stone rods by placing them in a stick pattern. Then place the stone rods diagonally with 2 cobblestone to craft a stone hammer.

The hammer breaks blocks down through several stages:

  • Stone becomes cobblestone
  • Cobblestone becomes gravel
  • Gravel becomes dirt
  • Dirt becomes sand
  • Sand becomes dust

For this early quest path, focus on making 10 dirt.

Create a Stone Crook and Gather Saplings

Craft a stone crook at the crafting table. Use it on dirt to obtain vanilla saplings. Gather 4 of each required sapling type to continue through the quest line.

Grow Your First Wood

Once you have oak saplings, place dirt blocks down and plant the saplings on top. Crouching repeatedly near a sapling can speed up growth. Collect 16 wood, then move on to storage, tools, and the next quests.

Continuing Progression

At this stage, you should be able to make stone, cobblestone, gravel, dirt, sand, dust, saplings, and wood. A chest is a good next craft, because StoneBlock starts filling your inventory fast.

Use the quest book as your main guide. Most quests include the information needed to complete them, and clicking an item in the quest book can show its recipe.

Common Issues

I get an error when joining the server. Make sure StoneBlock is installed through your launcher and that you are launching the correct profile. A vanilla client or the wrong modpack cannot join a StoneBlock server.

My server is stuck while loading. This can happen if mods were removed from an existing world. In the server console, run `/fml confirm` to continue loading with the missing mods removed. Back up the world first when possible.

Modded items appear in creative but do not generate normally. The server may not be running the StoneBlock version correctly, or the world may have been generated before the pack was fully applied. Recheck the selected server version, restart the server, and create a fresh world if needed.
