How to Give Players Permissions on Your Minecraft Server

Setting up your Minecraft server for multiplayer involves plugins or mods, configuring files, and managing permissions. Permissions let players use commands and perform actions; without them, mods or plugins won’t work properly. Some plugins don’t require permissions, but most do. Properly setting permissions ensures all users can interact with your server, whether it’s a minigame world or a custom modpack.

Permission Managers

A universal tool for managing permissions on any modded or plugin-based server is LuckPerms. It allows for extensive customization:

  • Create unique ranks with prefixes or suffixes.

  • Control which commands and abilities players can use.

  • Show ranks in chat messages to distinguish user roles.

LuckPerms Plugin/Mod

LuckPerms works with both plugins and mods and supports the latest Minecraft versions, as well as older ones. It’s compatible with Bungeecord for network-wide permission integration. After installation, you can manage permissions via the built-in editor or manually in the configuration files.

Features:

  • Create and manage player groups

  • Assign permissions to individual accounts or ranks

  • Customize chat prefixes, suffixes, and roles

While in the secure editor, you can create a new group for players to join. Fill in the necessary fields, such as Group Name, Display Name, Prefix, and others. This is optional, as there is a default rank for all users. However, creating groups is highly recommended for customizing in-game chat and organizing permissions on your Minecraft server.

Once you’re satisfied with the groups, you can start adding permissions. This involves finding specific permission nodes to use, such as EssentialsX nodes from its official wiki. It’s recommended to check the plugin’s main page or website for this information. After compiling a list of permission nodes, enter them into the editor and save your changes.
