How to Get a Mending Villager in Minecraft

Minecraft·September 18, 2022·7 min read

Mending is one of Minecraft's most useful enchantments because it repairs gear with experience orbs instead of forcing constant replacements. With the right villager setup, you can turn that rare-looking book into a reliable trade. Here is the five-step method.

1. Make a Lectern

Start by crafting a lectern with four wooden slabs and one bookshelf. Put three slabs across the top row of the crafting table, place the bookshelf in the center slot, then place the last slab in the bottom-center slot.

2. Locate a Village

Next, find a village with at least one adult villager. Bring the lectern with you instead of leaving it at home like a very small, very rectangular mistake.

3. Choose the Villager

Pick an adult villager and block the house door with dirt or another simple block. Any adult villager can work, but if the villager already has a profession, you must break their current job site block first.

Once the villager is unemployed and safely contained, move on to the lectern step.

4. Place the Lectern

Put the lectern inside the house. If the setup is correct, the villager should claim it and become a librarian. Open the trade menu and check whether a Mending enchanted book appears.

If Mending is already available, you are done. If not, the next step is the part where patience earns its keep.

5. Reroll the Librarian Trade

Break the lectern, then place it again. The villager should briefly lose the librarian profession and then reclaim it, refreshing the trade options. Check the trade menu each time.

Repeat that break-and-place cycle until Mending appears. The result is chance-based, so it may take a while, but it does not require a special village, a special villager, or any forbidden magic beyond stubbornness.

Using Your Mending Villager

After Mending appears, the villager can provide Mending books for emeralds on demand. That is useful for tools, armor, and Elytras, especially once netherite gear enters the picture.

One warning remains: some servers treat trade rerolling or villager setups differently in their rules. Check the server rules before building a Mending villager station in multiplayer.
