As Minecraft releases new updates, some servers may choose to stay on older versions while others update immediately. This can cause connection issues when the client and server versions do not match. In this guide, we will show you how to fix the "Outdated Server" error in Minecraft, covering solutions for both the client and the server side.
Outdated Minecraft Server
Whether you are joining your own server or someone else's, the game version plays a critical role in the connection attempt. If your client version does not match the server version, you will see the "Outdated Server" error. This means you need to either update your client to match the server or update the server to match your client.
How to Fix an Outdated Server
There are two solutions to this problem, which depend on whether you are the server owner or not. The first is done from the client side, and the second from the server side. We will cover both methods below.
Client
Open the Minecraft launcher and head to the Installations section.
Once there, click on New Installation and you will see fields to edit.
Enter the name of the new profile in the Name field, as this will be displayed in your installations list.
From the Version dropdown menu, select the game version you want.
Then, in the bottom right corner, press Create and locate the newly created profile.
Click Play and it will load the new version, then launch the game instantly.
Note: It should appear at the bottom of your profile list, but in some cases it might be at the top or middle.
When you enter the game, join the server to test if it works on the new installation.
Server
Head to your Holy Hosting server panel and locate the Game Files section.
Click on the currently selected version, which will display a dropdown menu.
Use the text box to find the game version you want or scroll until you find it.
Once found, select it and press Change Version when asked for confirmation.
On the next prompt, choose between Create New World or Use Existing World.
Note: This depends on whether you are upgrading or downgrading the version. If upgrading, continue using the same world; otherwise, create a new one to avoid issues.
Then, continue by clicking the Restart Now button to apply the changes.
Wait for the server to finish loading, then join using the version you selected to confirm it works.

Conclusion
Establishing successful connections is what any server owner wants, as this allows people to join and enjoy the game. We hope this guide has helped you fix the "Outdated Server" error in Minecraft. If you continue to experience issues, do not hesitate to contact our support team for further assistance.
Common Issues
Players Cannot Join
If you changed the server version, make sure all players are using the same version to join. Assuming you changed the version on the server side, all players will need to create a new installation with the matching version. If the issue persists, try restarting the server.
The Server Does Not Start
After changing the server version, the server may not start due to the world or mods. If you have mods, update them to the new version or remove them. If the world is the issue, create a new one or restore a backup. If the problem persists, contact our support team.
