During a Minecraft session, issues can arise that cause the game to crash or make it necessary to review past logs. These problems can stem from ticking errors or chat-related issues, prompting players to search for crash reports and log files. Locating these files on your computer can be tricky, as they’re stored in the launcher’s main directory. It’s important to know where these files are since they’re essential for troubleshooting potential bugs or crashes. For this reason, Holy Hosting has prepared this guide to help you find both crash reports and log files in Minecraft.

How to Find Crash Reports
There are two types of crashes your Minecraft launcher might experience: a normal crash and a JVM variant. The second type doesn’t behave like a regular crash report — it’s saved as a file named hs_err_pid#####.log. Most crashes, however, are stored in files that look like crash-yyyy-mm-dd_hh.mm.ss-client.txt. To learn more about how to read these reports, you can check out our dedicated guide here. Below, we’ll show you how to find a standard Minecraft crash report on your computer.
Press Windows + R, then type %appdata%\.minecraft\ in the Open field.
Click OK, then locate and open the crash-reports folder.
Inside, you’ll see one or more crash files that you can open and review.
All future crash reports will appear in this folder. If it doesn’t exist, you can create it manually to keep things organized.
If you’re trying to locate a server crash report, go to your Holy Hosting server panel, click FTP File Access in the top left, and log in using your password. Then open the crash-reports folder to view the file(s).
How to Find Log Files
Minecraft always generates a latest.log file for recent activity and additional logs named like yyyy-mm-dd-n.log.gz for older data.Regular .log files can be opened with basic programs like Notepad, while .log.gz files require tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR to view. Reading them can be tricky, so check out our other guide for easier methods. Here’s how to find these log files on your computer:
Press Windows + R on your keyboard and type %appdata%\.minecraft\logs in the Open field.
Click OK, and you’ll see all your log files in that directory.
You can open latest.log to view the most recent session data, or use an external program to read the others.
Similarly, if you want to find server log files, go to your Holy Hosting panel, click FTP File Access, log in with your password, and open the logs folder to view or edit the files.
