As of Minecraft snapshot 25w05a, fireflies appear at night through firefly bush blocks. They add a small glow, help stop nearby mob spawning, and make swamps feel slightly less suspicious.

Minecraft fireflies are not separate mobs like bees or frogs. They are glowing particles that appear around a block called the firefly bush.
