Changing Your Minecraft Username
Having a Minecraft account requires a username, and sometimes you might want to change it. Since 2015, Mojang has allowed username changes for all Java Edition accounts. Thousands of players have updated their usernames since then, and you can too.
However, the process must be done outside the default Minecraft launcher, which can be confusing. There are also specific rules to follow to successfully change your username; failing to do so will prevent the change. This Holy Hosting guide covers the necessary information and steps to update your profile name.
Getting Started
There are a few important things to know before changing your Minecraft username. You can only change it once every 30 days, so attempting to change it too soon will be blocked. Usernames must be 3–16 characters long, using only English letters, numbers 0–9, and a single underscore as a special character.
Every username you choose is permanently linked to your account, meaning anyone can view your name history, including how many times you’ve changed it and what the previous names were—usually through sites like NameMC.
Finally, make sure to follow Mojang’s Community Guidelines when updating your name. Once you understand these rules, you can follow the steps below to change your username.
Change Username
Go to the Minecraft website and sign in with your Microsoft account.
If you aren’t redirected to the Profile page, hover over your username in the top right corner and click Profile.
Then, under Minecraft: Java Edition, click Profile Name.

Once in that section, enter your new username in the Java Profile Name text field.

Click Change Profile Name when you’re done, and you should be ready to go.
Changing Username in Bedrock
If you want to change your username in Bedrock Edition, you’ll need to change your Xbox Gamertag, as Microsoft handles usernames for this version. Log in to your Xbox account to update it. You can also check the official Minecraft FAQ for more details on changing your username or Gamertag.
