How to Change Your Minecraft World Version to 1.21 🛠️

Minecraft·March 22, 2026·14 min read

Today we have a tutorial on how to change any version of your Minecraft world to version 1.21🚀.. We are currently in a HolyHosting world on version 1.18.2 and we will update it. Let's go!

Initial Preparation

  • We are in a world on version 1.18.2. We will build something in this world to verify it's the same one when we change the version.

Shut Down the Server and Access Files

  • Go to your panel and shut down the server.
  • Go to the files section. Your world is in a folder, usually called "world", but in our case it's called "tutorial".

consola

Download the World

  • Paper is the software we use and it separates your world by dimensions (overworld🌿, end🌌, nether🔥).
  • Download these folders and rename them so you can send them to your world folder.

Compress and Download

  • Compress your world and download it.
  • Put the world in the "saves"📂 folder of your .minecraft and extract it. Open in Minecraft 1.21
  • Open Minecraft on version 1.21 and enter singleplayer.

Minecraft menu

  • Edit the world and select the option to optimize it. Warning: Your world will not be compatible with previous versions, so make a backup.

⚠️Common Problem: Not making a backup can result in losing your world if you decide to go back to a previous version.

Verify Changes

  • Confirm that the changes have been applied correctly. For example, look for the "trial chambers" added in 1.21.

Upload the Optimized World

  • Delete the old world from the panel.
  • Compress the optimized world and upload it again.
  • Rename the dimension folders and place them in the correct folder.

VERSION

Change the Server Version

  • Go to the versions section and select 1.21 or download the experimental version of Paper MC.

PAPER

  • Rename the file to server.jar so the panel detects it.
  • Start the server and change the Java version to the required one (Java 21).

⚠️Common Problem: Not changing the Java ☕ version can cause compatibility issues.

Confirm Functionality

  • Enter the world again and verify that everything works correctly. Look for the new structures added in the 1.21.
