Astegon is a Dragon/Dark Pal worth chasing if you want a powerful fighter with excellent Mining. It is not exactly tucked beside the starter camp, though. To catch one, prepare for volcanic terrain, a cramped boss room, and a Pal that throws out heavy attacks like it has a personal grudge.

Astegon lives in the southwest volcanic region of Palworld. The boss version appears inside the Destroyed Mineshaft as a Level 48 encounter at coordinates -576, -421.
For the fastest route, use the Mount Obsidian Midpoint fast travel statue, then travel west. Since this is a later-game area, a flying Pal is very useful for crossing the molten terrain. Heat-resistant armor also makes the trip far less annoying, and in this biome, less annoying is a real upgrade.
Heat protection matters because of the volcano, not because Astegon itself is Fire-type. The fight is dangerous for a different reason: Astegon can keep pressure on you with repeated attacks inside a small, round room. Bring a shield so you have a backup defensive option when dodging is not enough.
Astegon is a Dragon/Dark Pal, and its only listed weakness here is Ice. Bring strong Ice Pals to wear it down faster. Frostallion and Foxcicle are both recommended options from the source guide.
The arena is enclosed, so avoid letting Astegon push you into a wall. Its most threatening move is a huge Dark-energy breath attack that hits multiple times. If the beam starts and you cannot fully evade it, a shield may be the difference between surviving and becoming cave decoration.
Once Astegon's health is low, use a Legendary Sphere for the best capture chance. Crafting one requires:

If the volcanic boss route sounds like too much trouble, breeding is another path. Astegon can hatch from Huge Dragon Eggs, which can be found around the map, but breeding gives a more targeted chance than hoping the next egg is the right one.
Use these breeding combinations for a chance at Astegon:
