How to Host and Play an MC Eternal Minecraft Server

Minecraft·May 20, 2026·24 min read

MC Eternal Overview

MC Eternal is a huge Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack built for players who want nearly every playstyle in one world. It combines adventure, magic, science, quests, bosses, automation, exploration, pets, towns, economy features, and some wonderfully strange details, including rats with cheese cannons. Minecraft was clearly not content being normal.

The pack includes roughly 300 mods, more than 750 quests, many Tinkers' Construct materials, factory systems, RPG progression, bounty mechanics, secrets, collectibles, tameable pets, and several major dimensions. Because it is large, both the server and client should have enough memory available before you invite everyone in.

Install MC Eternal on the Server

  1. Open the HolyHosting control panel and find the server version or jar selection area.
  2. Use the dropdown or search field to look for Eternal.
  1. Select MC Eternal, then confirm the version change.
  2. When prompted, create a new world. This helps prevent missing blocks, broken terrain, or old-world conflicts.
  3. Restart the server so the modpack can load fully.

Optional: Enable Biomes O' Plenty

MC Eternal can use Biomes O' Plenty world generation, but it must be set before the world is created.

  1. Stop the server from the control panel.
  2. Open the configuration files, then server settings.
  3. Find the level type option.
  4. Set the level type to `BIOMESOP`, which is the correct value for this 1.12.2 pack.
  1. Save the change, generate a fresh world when prompted, then restart the server.

Install the Client Modpack

Players need the same modpack installed locally before they can join.

  1. Download and install the CurseForge launcher.
  2. Open the app, go to Browse Modpacks, and search for MC Eternal.
  3. Select the pack named MC Eternal, then click Install.
  4. Once installation finishes, return to My Modpacks.
  1. Press Play to launch Minecraft with the pack enabled.

If a player joins with a different version, missing files, or a manually edited pack, connection errors are likely. Keep everyone on the same official release unless the server owner intentionally customizes the pack.

First Steps in the World

When you spawn for the first time, your inventory starts with a few important tools and the world behaves differently from vanilla Minecraft.

The Quest Book is one of the first items to open. It gives you structured objectives and rewards, so it is useful even if you normally prefer wandering in a straight line until something explodes.

The Skill Book lets you choose a class and improve specific abilities as you progress.

Tree chopping also works differently. A log may need to be broken multiple times before the blocks above collapse, so do not assume your axe is broken.

Exploration quickly becomes important. You can find small fountains, towers, dungeons, and other structures with loot or enemies inside.

Mods Worth Knowing Early

MC Eternal includes far too many mods to cover one by one, but several are useful to recognize early.

Dimensional Doors adds strange doors around the world. These lead to pocket dimensions that may contain dungeons, traps, and rewards.

Inventory Pets adds collectible pets that grant powers as long as you keep them fed.

BuildCraft gives you machinery such as quarries, which can mine ores and blocks automatically.

Thaumcraft focuses on magical research, essence, and crafting powerful tools through arcane systems.

Ice and Fire adds dragons that can be fought, looted, and eventually tamed. It also includes gear and other related rewards.

BiblioCraft helps with storage, displays, and decoration, which matters when a modpack throws hundreds of items at you.

Forestry adds renewable energy options along with tree, bee, and butterfly breeding.

Electroblob's Wizardry gives you wands and spells that can be found, bought, upgraded, and used against anything unfortunate enough to be nearby.

Major Dimensions

The Erebus

To enter The Erebus, build a portal frame from stone bricks and fill the shape with leaves. Then combine a keystone and a Staff of Gaea in front of the portal. This opens the arthropod-themed dimension.

Twilight Forest

To open Twilight Forest, dig a 2x2 hole, fill it with water, and surround it with flowers. Throw a diamond into the water to activate the portal. The dimension contains dungeons, bosses, mazes, and plenty of late-game objectives.

The Betweenlands

The Betweenlands is dangerous, swampy, and worth preparing for. First obtain a swamp talisman. Place a sapling in a flat area away from important builds, then use the talisman on it to grow the portal tree.

Atum

In MC Eternal, Atum is not reached through its usual basic portal route. You access it through Advanced Rocketry after building space infrastructure, including a space station that can warp to other locations.

Performance Notes

MC Eternal is demanding. A stronger PC is recommended for the client, and the server should have enough memory for a large modded pack. If the full pack is too heavy, MC Eternal Lite is a better option for lower-end machines or smaller groups.

Common Problems

I get an error when joining the server. This usually means the client does not match the server. Install the official MC Eternal pack through CurseForge and make sure the version matches.

The server is stuck loading. This can happen if a mod was removed from an existing world. In the server console, run `/fml confirm` to allow the world to continue loading with the missing mod content removed.

Modded items appear in creative but not in the world. The server may not actually be running MC Eternal. Recheck the selected server version in the panel, apply the pack again if needed, and restart the server.
