Running an FTB Direwolf20 Modded Server

What is Direwolf20?

Few corners of Minecraft modding have aged as gracefully as the Feed The Beast project. The FTB team has been packaging quality, well-maintained modpacks for years, and Direwolf20 is one of their signature releases. The pack is named after the YouTuber who plays it on his long-running singleplayer series, and the curated mod list is built to track the same experience he plays on camera, with the option to bring friends along.

It is a true all-purpose pack. Technical mods sit next to magic mods, and the result works for both tiny groups and larger communities.

What you can actually do in it

Direwolf20 leans hard into variety. A short tour:

  • Build factories that automate everything from ore processing to, yes, dirt blocks, using Buildcraft, MineFactory Reloaded and IC².
  • Generate power with IC² reactors, then scale up into Big Reactors once those start looking quaint.
  • Brew curses and rituals with Witchery, ideal for tormenting friends exactly once before they stop logging in.
  • Travel between custom dimensions through Mystcraft.
  • Use mob morphing to turn into a spider and climb walls, or a bat to fly around while you build.
  • Suit up in a Modular Powersuit that can fly, mine and one-shot mobs, then go sightseeing in the biomes added by Biomes O' Plenty.

The pack scales well, so whether you are running it for two people or twenty, it holds up.

Installing the Direwolf20 client

The supported way to play is through the FTB Launcher.

  1. Open the official FTB website.
  2. Download the launcher for your operating system (Windows, macOS or Linux).
  3. Install it and sign in.
  4. Open the modpacks tab, locate Direwolf20 and click install.
  5. Once the download finishes, hit play.

That covers the client. The server still has to match.

Setting up the server

The server needs to run the same modded jar your client uses. Mismatched versions will refuse to connect, and the launcher will not be subtle about it.

  1. Open your server's control panel and scroll down to the jar selection.
  2. Search for Direwolf20 and pick the corresponding jar.
  3. Generate a new world.
  4. Restart the server.
  5. Connect from your launcher and play.

If you are coming from vanilla or a different modpack, expect the first boot to take longer than usual while everything loads. Give it a minute before assuming something broke.

Final notes

Direwolf20 is a slightly unusual pack in that it was shaped around one creator's playstyle rather than a specific theme like skyblock or quests. The mod selection is still broad enough to work as a general-purpose modded experience: good for solo runs, good for small groups, and surprisingly durable on larger servers. A solid pick if you want a modded Minecraft world with a bit of everything inside it.
