Flying With Sulfur Cubes in Minecraft: Items, Setup, and Travel Steps

Minecraft·April 13, 2026·7 min read

Sulfur cubes are already useful for odd tricks, minigames, and accidental chaos. With the right setup, they can also help launch a flying boat that moves at very high speed, close enough to elytra travel to be funny and slightly alarming.

Where Sulfur Cubes Spawn

Sulfur cubes are found in sulfur caves, an underground biome. Rather than digging randomly, search the overworld surface for sulfur springs. These small volcano-shaped formations made of sulfur blocks signal that a sulfur cave has generated below.

Once the cave is reached, capture a sulfur cube with an empty bucket. This creates a bucket of sulfur cube, which is the key item for the flight setup.

Items Needed

  • Bucket of Sulfur Cube
  • Pig
  • Saddle
  • Log, any type
  • Chest Boat
  • Lead
  • Splash Potion of Slow Falling
  • Spear, preferably Netherite

Lower-tier spears can work, but the netherite spear's longer charge uptime makes the trick more consistent. The splash potion of slow falling is also important because one is used for each flight.

To brew a splash potion of slow falling, use a brewing stand with a water bottle, netherwart, phantom membrane, redstone, and gunpowder in that order.

How to Launch the Flying Boat

Start from a high location with a saddled pig, such as a mountain, tall tree, or similar launch point. The boat cannot climb upward, so the height where it launches is roughly the height it will try to keep.

  1. Place the sulfur cube.
  2. Put a log block inside the sulfur cube.
  3. Place the chest boat.
  4. Move the saddled pig into the chest boat.
  5. Attach the sulfur cube to the boat with a lead.
  6. Throw the splash potion of slow falling so it hits the sulfur cube, boat, and pig.
  7. Sit on the pig.
  8. Attack the sulfur cube to launch the boat.
  9. If nothing happens, reattach the lead. A correct attachment makes the boat move when the sulfur cube is pushed.
  10. Hold right click with the spear to use its charge ability, repeatedly hitting the sulfur cube in the direction of travel.
  11. Keep repeating the spear charge until reaching the destination.

In ideal conditions, the setup lasts as long as the slow falling effect. In survival, expect it to be less graceful. The trick is finicky, reach is limited, and maintaining height can be awkward. It is still a fun transport experiment, even if elytra are not exactly filing a retirement notice.
