Five Minecraft Gamerules That Can Change Your World

Minecraft·August 23, 2024·7 min read

Minecraft has rules like any other game, but some of them can be changed directly. Gamerules are a simple way to adjust how a world behaves, whether you want a smoother multiplayer server, a gentler survival run, or minecarts that suddenly remember they are vehicles.

Five Minecraft Gamerules Worth Trying

Player Sleeping Percentage
  • /gamerule playersSleepingPercentage 50

This gamerule is especially helpful on multiplayer servers. It changes what percentage of online players must sleep before the night is skipped.

With the example above, a server with ten players would only need five of them in beds to pass the night. That keeps everyone from waiting on one person who is "almost back" but is clearly still lost in a cave.

Keep Inventory
  • /gamerule keepInventory true

Keep inventory lets players keep their items after death. It is useful for younger players, casual survival worlds, or temporary events where losing gear would ruin the point.

For example, a server could turn it on during a PvP tournament so players can focus on the event instead of replacing armor afterward. Some players also use it in difficult modpacks like RLCraft to soften the punishment.

Snow Accumulation Height
  • /gamerule snowAccumulationHeight 8

Snow fans can use this gamerule to make snowfall build up more dramatically. Normally, snow only leaves a single layer on blocks and structures. Setting the value to 8 allows snow to stack up to a full block.

It is a small change with a big visual effect, especially in snowy towns, mountain bases, or winter-themed servers.

Limited Crafting
  • /gamerule doLimitedCrafting true

Limited crafting prevents players from crafting recipes they have not unlocked in the recipe book yet. At first, that sounds inconvenient, because it is. Used intentionally, though, it can create a challenge mode where players need to explore, unlock recipes, and coordinate progression.

It can also work for races or server events where discovering the right recipe becomes part of the competition.

Minecart Max Speed
  • /gamerule minecartMaxSpeed 1000

Minecart max speed is a newer gamerule available only through the experimental options of Minecraft 1.21.2, and it greatly raises the speed cap for minecarts.

With the value pushed up, minecarts can become one of the fastest travel methods in the game. That opens the door for rollercoasters, rapid transit systems, and trains that may technically qualify as poor decisions.
