How to Fix Pipeline Overextended in Factorio 2.0

Factorio·October 24, 2024·6 min read

Factorio's Space Age launch and Update 2.0 changed several systems, including fluids. One visible result is a new message: Pipeline Overextended. It can look alarming, but it is not a bug and it does not mean the whole fluid network needs to be rebuilt.

Pipeline Overextended Fix

On September 27, Factorio's developers published an update explaining Version 2.0 pipeline extents. The update added a 250x250-tile limit to pipelines. If a pipe network goes beyond that limit, the game shows the Pipeline Overextended error.

The solution is to add pumps to the pipeline. In Factorio 2.0, long pipe runs need pumps to divide the system into valid sections.

A practical rule is to place pumps every 200 to 300 blocks. The maximum length before a pump is needed is 320 blocks, but leaving some margin makes layouts easier to manage. Also check pump direction, because a backwards pump is just a very expensive way to stop fluid.

For best results, start and end long pipelines with pumps.

Pipeline and Fluid Changes in Factorio 2.0

The pipeline limit is only one part of the fluid system update. Wube Software LTD also changed the algorithm and balance behind fluid flow.

With Update 2.0, the output rate is based on the sink's fullness ratio and has a limit of 100 fluid per flow operation. The input rate limit applies to every fluid flow operation except fluid wagons. This makes distribution between machines more even and reduces how much build order affects flow rate.

The update also made several balance adjustments:

  • Pumps now operate at 1200/s, a 10x decrease, though quality can improve them
  • Fluid wagons now hold 50,000, twice their previous capacity
  • Water now expands to ten steam in boilers and heat exchangers

Together, these changes create a more reasonable pumping rate of 3600/s per wagon and make fluid trains more competitive for large pipeline systems.
