Explorer's Compass Mod Setup and Usage Guide

Overview

Minecraft worlds are full of structures worth finding, from villages and mineshafts to desert pyramids packed with loot. The problem is that searching for one specific structure can turn into a very long walk, especially if you are avoiding admin commands.

Explorer's Compass solves that problem by adding a craftable item that can search for structures in your world. It works with vanilla structures and supported modded structures, letting players select a target and follow the compass toward it. It is especially useful on survival servers where exploration is part of the fun, but wandering in circles is less charming.

What Explorer's Compass Does

Explorer's Compass is a Minecraft mod by Chaosyr on CurseForge and is closely related to Nature's Compass. Depending on the version you download, it supports Forge or Fabric and is available for multiple Minecraft versions. Always match the mod loader and Minecraft version on the server and the client, or the game will complain loudly and usually refuse to connect.

Download Explorer's Compass

  1. Open the Explorer's Compass page on CurseForge.
  2. Select Files near the top of the page to view available builds.
  1. Choose View All, then filter by Forge or Fabric using the dropdown.
  2. Find the file that matches your Minecraft version.
  3. Click Download on the right side of the file listing.
  1. Save the `.jar` file somewhere easy to find, since it will be uploaded to the server and added to your own game.

Install Explorer's Compass on the Server

  1. Open your HolyHosting server panel and stop the server.
  2. Find the Game File or server software section.
  1. Make sure the server is running the matching Forge or Fabric version for the mod file you downloaded.
  2. Open your server files through FTP or the file manager.
  3. Locate the `mods` folder. If it does not exist, create it.
  1. Open the `mods` folder and upload the Explorer's Compass `.jar` file.
  2. Wait until the upload reaches 100 percent.
  1. Return to the main server page and restart the server.

Once the server finishes starting, Explorer's Compass should be loaded server-side. Players still need the same mod installed locally before joining.

Install the Mod on Your Minecraft Client

  1. Install the correct Forge or Fabric loader on your computer first.
  2. Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Installations.
  3. Hover over your modded installation and select the folder icon or Open Folder.
  1. In the game directory, locate or create the `mods` folder.
  2. Place the Explorer's Compass `.jar` file inside that folder.
  1. Go back to the launcher and start Minecraft with the matching modded profile.

Crafting Explorer's Compass

After the mod is installed, craft the item at a crafting table. The recipe uses a few materials that are not always sitting in a starter chest, so gather them before opening the table.

  • 1 Compass
  • 4 Cobwebs
  • 4 Cracked Stone Bricks

Using the Compass Menu

Right-click with Explorer's Compass in hand to open its tracking menu. This screen is where you choose the structure you want to locate and adjust how the list is displayed.

Choosing a Structure

The structure browser lists available targets from Minecraft and compatible mods. You can search by name, check the source mod or group, and see which dimension the structure belongs to. Click a structure to select it as the tracking target.

Sorting and Search Controls

The buttons beside the list help organize and search the results. The sort option changes the list order, while the search buttons can look for either the selected structure or its broader structure group.

Teleport Button

Explorer's Compass can include a teleport option for the currently tracked structure. This is restricted to players with admin permissions, so regular survival players cannot use it unless they have the required access.

Common Problems

The server gives an error when joining. This usually means the client setup does not match the server. Confirm that Forge or Fabric is installed on your computer, that Explorer's Compass is in the local `mods` folder, and that the Minecraft version matches the server. Also make sure you are launching the correct modded profile.

The item exists, but it does not work. If the client is installed correctly, check the server side next. Confirm that the server is running Forge or Fabric, then open the server's `mods` folder and verify that the Explorer's Compass `.jar` file is present. If it is missing, upload it again and restart the server before testing.
