CraftBukkit, Spigot, and PaperMC are three popular implementations that Minecraft servers use. CraftBukkit is a modified version of the official Minecraft server software that allows plugins to be added, making it easier to customize the gameplay experience. Spigot is a derivative of CraftBukkit that includes additional optimizations, performance improvements, and new features that make it more flexible and user-friendly. PaperMC is another derivative of Spigot that takes the concept of performance optimization even further, focusing on minimizing latency and improving server stability.
Differences Between CraftBukkit, Spigot, and Paper
Adding plugin support to servers is essential for all Minecraft server owners. Vanilla Minecraft does not allow such modifications (outside of data packs), so most turn to CraftBukkit, Spigot, or PaperMC to modify their servers. Which one is the right choice for your server?
CraftBukkit
CraftBukkit was the first widely used platform for plugin support.
It is still updated by the Spigot team but is mostly outdated.
Most users have moved from Bukkit to Spigot due to the lack of support and outdated infrastructure.

Spigot
It is a derivative of Bukkit and essentially took over the Bukkit platform. Spigot offers everything Bukkit does, but with more optimization and a better structure to help servers run smoothly.
It provides everything CraftBukkit offers, but with more features and improvements.
Optimized for a smooth Vanilla Minecraft experience, but it still falls short of what most users now prefer to run — PaperMC.

PaperMC
PaperMC takes everything Bukkit and Spigot did well and further optimizes an already well-functioning platform.
It provides the most optimized experience among the three options.
PaperMC is now the preferred choice for most server owners and is what we at HolyHosting recommend everyone run instead of Spigot or Bukkit.
It includes a crash and timing reporting system that helps identify the causes of lag and crashes.
