Citizens Plugin

Minecraft·March 22, 2026·13 min read

One of the best things about a Minecraft server is the ability to customize it beyond Vanilla Minecraft. Adding plugins is the way to do it, and a great way to bring your server to life is with Citizens, a Minecraft plugin that allows the creation of NPCs (Non-Player Characters) on your server. Some use it for design, as you can bring NPCs into the game with your skin, your friends', or even as Notch or Herobrine. Others use NPCs as shops, information providers, or teleporters. This plugin is a great resource and we'll teach you how to install it on your server.

When you download Citizens, you will also need to download the Vault plugin. If you don't download this plugin, Citizens will not work.

How to install Citizens

Installation via the panel

1. Make sure your server is running Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper. You can verify this in the "jar" dropdown menu in the game control panel.

2. In the game panel, go to the "Plugins List" tab on the left.

3. Search for the plugin by name, Citizens.

4. At the bottom of the page, check the version you have selected. It's good to cross-reference this with the official Bukkit page.

5. Find the correct version in the dropdown menu, select it, and press install.

6. Go back to the Game Panel and restart your server. You can check if the plugin was installed successfully by typing "pl" in the console.

Installation via FTP

1. Visit the official plugin page on Spigot for version 1.14+ and click on the "File" tab.

2. Find the update compatible with your server version and click the download icon.

3. Go to the Game Panel and click on "FTP File Access" on the left side of the panel.

4. Once you enter FTP File Access, you will see a list of your files. Open the plugins folder and click "Upload" in the upper left of the page.

5. Drag your plugins to the right side of the page and wait for it to reach 100%.

6. Go back to the Game Panel and restart your server. The plugin should be installed now. You can verify this by typing "pl" in the console.

Citizens Commands

Almost all aspects of Citizens are controlled in-game through commands.

- /citizens: Shows basic information about the plugin.

- /citizens help: Help page for the plugin, you'll advance using a page number.

- /npc help: Shows the entire help menu and commands needed for NPC creation.

- /npc create: You can use this command to create an NPC.

- /npc select: If you type this command while looking at an NPC, it will select it.

- /trait help: Shows all the different applicable traits for the NPC you've created.

- /template help: Allows you to create different NPC templates to apply, so you don't have to keep using a multitude of commands for each NPC.

You can find a list of all commands [here](link).

Citizens Uses

This plugin can be used for a variety of different tasks. Some of the most common uses are:

- Traders: NPCs can be used as traders, meaning players can buy or sell items to them based on the server prices you've set with a separate shop plugin.

- Quests: NPCs can also be used with various quest plugins that allow them to perform different tasks or dialogues related to a quest.

- Decoration: Often, NPCs are used simply as decoration to make an area look more populated or realistic.

- Information Boards: Some servers, like our mcMMO game type server, can use NPCs to convey information to a player or to run a specific command.

These are not the only things Citizens NPCs can be used for, but they are just some ideas to inform you about common uses.

Conclusion

In almost every server you play on, you'll probably see NPCs. With infinite possibilities, Citizens is a plugin that can adapt to almost any server. Whether you use it for decoration, information, quests, or another of its many uses, Citizens is the perfect way to liven up your gaming experience.

This plugin is only compatible with Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper servers. You won't be able to use it on modded Minecraft or Vanilla. You can find a guide for changing your server version [here](link). Don't forget that along with the plugin you'll need to download Vault.
