Chunk Loader in Minecraft

Minecraft·March 22, 2026·9 min read

The chunk loaders in Minecraft keep certain areas of the world active even when no players are nearby. This allows mob farms or crop farms to keep running all the time, ideal for maximizing resource production.

A chunk loader keeps the game ticks running within a zone (usually 3x3 chunks). It can be used in the Overworld, the Nether or the End, and is usually built with redstone mechanisms that send items between Nether portals to keep the areas active.

Materials needed:

  • 10 Obsidian
  • 14 Building Blocks
  • 2 Comparators
  • 2 Redstone Dust
  • 4 Droppers
  • 2 Observers
  • 2 Hoppers
  • 1 Flint & Steel
  • 2 Levers

Basic steps:

  • Choose the location and break 2 blocks in the ground.
  • Build a Nether portal and place the droppers and hoppers according to the design.
  • Connect comparators, redstone, and observers.
  • Cover the components and light the portal.
  • Repeat the process in the Nether.
  • Use the levers to turn the system on or off.

The goal is for items to travel infinitely between dimensions, keeping the chunks loaded.

If you don't want to deal with redstone, you can use:

  • Mod "Chunk Loaders" (for Forge and Fabric).
  • Plugin "ChunkLoader" (for Spigot servers). Both allow you to easily load chunks with commands or special blocks.
