Can You Still Play Minecraft Story Mode Today?

Minecraft·August 7, 2024·4 min read

Minecraft Story Mode still has fans, and interest tends to return whenever Minecraft appears in wider entertainment news. The problem is that the game itself is no longer easy to get, so playing it today takes more effort than simply opening a store page.

Why Minecraft Story Mode Disappeared

Minecraft Story Mode was removed from nearly every storefront after Telltale Games lost the Minecraft licensing rights in 2018. Because of that, both seasons are now difficult to access legally.

There are still a few legitimate options, but each comes with limits.

Physical Copies

Most physical copies of Minecraft Story Mode still work on the platform they were made for. Supported physical releases include PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and Windows.

For PS3 and Xbox 360, the source guide notes that `The Complete Adventure` versions are required, since those editions contain what is needed for the full experience.

Digital Downloads

Minecraft Story Mode is no longer available for normal digital purchase because of the licensing issues. Some third-party sellers claim to offer Steam keys, but the remaining listings are often expensive and mixed with scams. That route is not recommended.

YouTube Playthroughs

The safest fallback is watching a full playthrough on YouTube. You lose the ability to make choices yourself, which is a pretty important part of an interactive story, but it is still a legal way to experience the plot.

Will Minecraft Story Mode Return?

New Minecraft Story Mode content appears unlikely. Telltale Games went bankrupt in 2018 and lost the Minecraft license, which is why the game became so hard to obtain. Even after Telltale returned, the situation did not meaningfully change.

That suggests either a new agreement has not been reached or Mojang is not interested in bringing Story Mode back. For now, physical copies and recorded playthroughs remain the realistic options.
