Five Project Zomboid Mods From 2022 That Are Still Worth Installing

Project Zomboid·February 18, 2023·8 min read

2022 was a big year for Project Zomboid. Multiplayer dropped, streamers picked it up, and the workshop filled up with fresh ideas faster than a Kentucky horde fills up a parking lot. Looking back, five mods stand out as the ones most worth keeping in your rotation.

Common Sense

Quality-of-life mods dominated the year, and Common Sense was the poster child. It adds the obvious actions the base game forgot, like prying open a stubborn door with the crowbar already in your hand. Nothing flashy, just sensible. The kind of mod you forget is installed until you go back to vanilla and feel oddly limited.

Insurgent: Black Ops Profession

Landing late in the year, Insurgent: Black Ops Profession lets you start as a hardened operative dropped into the exclusion zone to thin out the undead population. It is the closest Project Zomboid gets to a power fantasy, which is to say you will still die eventually, just with better starting gear and a much higher kill count first.

Lingering Whispers

Not every mod is meant for every player. Lingering Whispers pushes the lore into darker territory, suggesting that something of the person remains trapped inside the zombie. A muttered word here, a faint sob there, rare enough that you cannot tell if it is awareness or just a reflex. If horror with a psychological edge is your thing, install it. If not, skip it.

Gun Stock Attack

Another realism nudge. Gun Stock Attack gives you the option to bash a zombie with the back end of a rifle instead of awkwardly switching weapons in a panic. It blurs the line between quality of life and combat upgrade since it does give you a real edge, but the logic is hard to argue with. Anyone holding a rifle would absolutely swing it.

Basements

Basements does exactly what the name suggests. Each building can hold one player-built basement, treated as a regular constructed structure. Useful for storage, hiding spots, and panic rooms. One warning though: zombies cannot follow you down, but they absolutely will gather above the hatch and wait. Plan your exit before you commit to the bunker life.

Wrapping Up

2022 produced a lot more than five good mods, and the workshop has kept growing since. These five are a solid starting point if you want to revisit the year that turned Project Zomboid into a multiplayer phenomenon. Pick the ones that match the vibe you want, whether that is grounded realism, late-night horror, or a tactical do-over.
