Best Minecraft 1.21 Trident Enchantments for Combat and Mobility

Minecraft·August 8, 2024·10 min read

The trident is easy to overlook until it starts solving problems that swords and bows cannot. In Minecraft 1.21, it can be a melee weapon, a thrown weapon, and, with the right setup, a rain-powered launch system.

Compatible Trident Enchantments

Impaling
  • Maximum Level: V
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Trident only

Impaling adds 2.5 damage per level against aquatic mobs, reaching its highest bonus at level V. In Bedrock Edition, the bonus applies to any mob considered wet, including land mobs standing outside in rain.

Loyalty
  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Trident only, incompatible with Riptide

Loyalty makes a thrown trident return to the player after impact. Higher levels make it return faster, though the exact return time still depends on how far it traveled.

Channeling
  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Trident only, incompatible with Riptide

Channeling summons lightning when a thrown trident hits a mob during a thunderstorm. The target must be outside, and there must be no block above it. If there is a roof in the way, the sky politely refuses to participate.

Riptide
  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Trident only, incompatible with Loyalty and Channeling

Riptide launches the player forward when the trident is thrown, but only in water or rainy weather. In rain or while standing in water, the travel distance is 6 blocks multiplied by the enchantment level, plus 3. When submerged, it is 4 blocks multiplied by the level, plus 3.

Unbreaking
  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Unbreaking gives the trident a chance to avoid durability loss when used. Each level greatly extends its average lifespan, with level III being the best option.

Mending
  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Mending repairs the trident by consuming Experience Orbs. The trident must be held, equipped, or in the off hand for those orbs to repair it.

Best Trident Enchantment Setup

  • Impaling V
  • Riptide III
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending I

This build focuses on long-term utility. Impaling adds damage in the trident's best matchups, Unbreaking and Mending keep it usable, and Riptide gives the weapon a movement role that no bow can copy.

The main tradeoff is giving up Loyalty and Channeling. A Loyalty and Channeling trident can be fun, especially during storms, but Riptide has stronger everyday value. It helps with underwater fights, rainy chases, shield bypasses, and extremely fast travel when paired with elytra.

A thrown trident can act like an alternative ranged weapon, but on land, the bow usually wins, especially in Java Edition. Riptide gives the trident a more distinct purpose: closing distance, escaping danger, and turning bad weather into transportation.
