Best Minecraft 1.21 Pickaxe Enchantments for Mining

Minecraft·August 8, 2024·9 min read

A strong pickaxe changes the pace of Minecraft more than almost any other tool. Mining becomes faster, ores become more profitable, and the tool itself lasts long enough to stop feeling disposable. Here are all pickaxe-compatible enchantments in Minecraft 1.21 and the best setup for general use.

Compatible Pickaxe Enchantments

Efficiency

  • Maximum Level: V
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Efficiency increases mining speed. Each level improves how quickly compatible blocks break, with Efficiency V providing the highest speed bonus.

Fortune

  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Incompatible with Silk Touch

Fortune gives eligible blocks a chance to drop extra items. At level 1, blocks such as iron ore have a 33% chance to double drops. At level 2, the tool can double or triple drops with a 25% chance for each result. At level 3, it can double, triple, or quadruple drops, with each roll having a 20% chance.

Silk Touch

  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: Incompatible with Fortune

Silk Touch makes blocks drop themselves instead of their normal resources. For example, mining iron ore drops the ore block rather than raw iron. It is excellent for storage, building, and collecting blocks that would otherwise transform or break.

Unbreaking

  • Maximum Level: III
  • Source: Enchanting Table and Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Unbreaking gives tool uses a chance not to reduce durability. Each level adds about 100% more average lifespan, up to level 3.

Mending

  • Maximum Level: I
  • Source: Enchanted Books
  • Restrictions: None

Mending uses collected Experience Orbs to repair the enchanted item. The pickaxe must be held or otherwise eligible for repair when the XP is collected.

Best Pickaxe Enchantments

  • Efficiency V
  • Fortune III
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending I

This is the best all-purpose mining setup for a pickaxe in Minecraft 1.21. Efficiency V speeds up the work, Fortune III improves ore output, Unbreaking III slows durability loss, and Mending keeps the tool alive as long as XP is available.

Fortune is usually the better choice for a first main pickaxe because early-game diamonds, coal, redstone, lapis, emeralds, and other compatible drops matter more than tidy block storage. It also applies to some blocks outside normal mining use, including gravel, carrots, and potatoes when the block supports Fortune.

That does not make Silk Touch weak. It is still worth making a second pickaxe with Silk Touch for collecting ore blocks, moving fragile blocks, or saving inventory space during longer mining trips. The ideal late-game answer is not Fortune or Silk Touch. It is both, because Minecraft inventory management is already cruel enough.
