How to Add Tuff Golems to Minecraft with Addons and Mods

Minecraft·February 19, 2023·7 min read

The Tuff Golem did not win its Minecraft mob vote, but that has not stopped players from bringing it back through community projects. Vanilla Minecraft does not include Tuff Golems, so adding one requires an addon on Bedrock Edition or a mod on Java Edition.

What Was the Tuff Golem?

The proposed Tuff Golem was a decorative helper mob. If it had won the vote, it would have been able to hold items like a moving item frame, wander around occasionally, then return to a statue-like state near where it was built.

There was also speculation that its inclusion could have brought extra hats or art-related items, though the original concept never reached vanilla Minecraft. The official version is still absent, but fan creators have built playable alternatives.

Bedrock Edition Tuff Golem Addon

For Bedrock Edition, JujuStyle7 released a popular Tuff Golem addon on MCPEDL. It includes the Tuff Golem concept and its main proposed behavior, though it does not include the hat or extra art items mentioned around the vote.

The same addon also includes the Rascal, another mob vote candidate. In the addon, the Rascal can be found moving through caves, which gives the pack more than one lost mob to experiment with.

Java Edition Tuff Golem Mod

Java Edition players have several mod options, but ZainJx81's Mob Vote 2022 mod appears to be one of the most popular choices. Like the Bedrock addon, it adds the Tuff Golem and the Rascal, bringing back the proposed mob vote features through third-party files.

To use this mod, Fabric must be installed on the client along with the mod itself. Anyone joining a modded server would also need the required client-side setup.

Can You Make Tuff Golems in Vanilla Minecraft?

No. Tuff Golems cannot be created in unmodded Minecraft. Any guide, server, or world that includes them is using third-party content. That is not a bad thing, but it is important to know before searching a crafting table for a recipe that does not exist.

Keeping the Little Golem Around

The Tuff Golem may have lost the vote, but community addons and mods keep the idea playable for anyone willing to install extra files. Whether Mojang ever revisits the mob is unknown, so for now, fan projects are the way to give this small statue friend a second chance.
