How to Add Admins to a Valheim Server

Valheim Server Admin Setup

As a Valheim server gets busier, moderation stops being optional. Trusted admins can help keep the world playable by removing problem players, managing bans, and checking basic server details. They do not automatically receive creative-style cheat powers, which is probably for the best unless your village really needed 900 turnips.

Valheim admin access is tied to a player's SteamID64. Because of that, you cannot simply type a username into the server console and call it done. First, collect the correct ID, then add it to the admin list on the server.

Find the Player's SteamID64

Before editing the admin file, get the SteamID64 for each player you want to promote.

  1. Open a SteamID lookup site, such as steamid.io.
  1. Enter the player's Steam profile URL or Steam username.
  2. Find the SteamID64 value and copy it somewhere safe for the next step.

Use the SteamID64 specifically. Other Steam ID formats may look similar, but Valheim expects the 64-bit version.

Add the SteamID64 to the Admin List

Once you have the player's ID, add it to the Valheim admin list from your server control panel.

  1. Open your HolyHosting server panel.
  2. Go to Config Files from the left-side menu.
  3. Open the Valheim Admin List file.
  1. Add the player's SteamID64 on its own line.
  2. If you are adding multiple admins, place only one ID per line.
  1. Save the file.

The change should apply immediately in most cases. If the player cannot use admin commands after saving, have them reconnect to the server before troubleshooting anything else.

Enable the Valheim Console

Admin access only helps if the player can open the in-game console. Each admin needs to enable it locally through Steam.

  1. Open the Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Valheim and select Properties.
  1. Under the General tab, find Launch Options.
  2. Enter `-console`, including the hyphen.

After launching Valheim, press F5 in-game to open the console and run admin commands.

Useful Valheim Admin Commands

  • `help` shows available server commands.
  • `kick [name/ip/userID]` removes a player from the server.
  • `ban [name/ip/userID]` bans a player.
  • `unban [ip/userID]` removes a ban.
  • `banned` lists banned users.
  • `ping` checks server latency.
  • `lodbias [number]` changes view distance, usually from 1 to 5.
  • `info` displays current system information.
  • `save` forces the world to save.
  • `optterrain` optimizes old terrain modifications.

Final Notes

Adding admins is a practical way to keep a Valheim server fair and manageable, especially for larger groups. Give access only to players you trust, keep each SteamID64 on its own line, and make sure every admin has enabled the console before trying commands.
