5 Practical Tools Minecraft Server Owners Rely On

Minecraft·February 4, 2022·7 min read

Running a Minecraft server is easier when the right tools are already in place. Some improve daily management, while others sit quietly until something breaks and suddenly become priceless.

Here are five tools and practices many server owners should understand.

Plugins

Plugins are the multi-tool of Minecraft server management. They can add commands, permissions, protections, land claims, economies, chat formatting, minigames, and more. The difficult part is often choosing which ones deserve a spot.

A guide like Five Essential Server Plugins for Minecraft is a good starting point for common needs such as permissions, rollback protection, voting rewards, and basic commands.

Modded servers are different. Forge and Fabric do not support Bukkit-style plugins by default, although some compatibility options may exist depending on the Minecraft version and setup. HolyHosting support can help confirm whether an option is available.

Backups

Backups are not exciting until the day they save the world. Then they become legendary.

Every server should have a backup plan. World corruption, bad plugin updates, accidental deletions, griefing, and modpack issues can all destroy hours or months of work. A few minutes spent configuring backups can prevent a much larger problem later.

Backups may be handled by plugins, mods, scripts, or the hosting panel. The exact method matters less than making sure backups run consistently and can actually be restored.

FTP Client

An FTP client gives server owners direct access to server files from their own computer. It is useful for uploading worlds, downloading logs, editing config files, replacing plugin jars, and managing larger file changes.

HolyHosting includes a strong file manager, but FTP is still worth learning because it offers fast transfers and full control when managing a busy server.

MCA Selector

MCA Selector is a third-party program for editing Minecraft world region files. One of its most useful features is deleting selected chunks while keeping the rest of the world intact.

That helps after a Minecraft update adds new world generation. Instead of resetting the whole world, owners can remove unused chunks so they regenerate with new terrain and features.

MCA Selector can also do more, including editing existing chunks and importing custom ones.

Region Fixer

Region Fixer is another third-party tool, and ideally it is one nobody has to use often. It can remove corrupted chunks and problematic entities from a Minecraft world.

For example, if a modded machine creates so many entities that players crash near an area, Region Fixer may be able to clear the issue. HolyHosting clients can open a ticket and ask staff to run this tool when needed.

A Safer Server Toolbox

Plugins improve the server, backups protect it, FTP makes file management easier, MCA Selector helps with world updates, and Region Fixer can rescue damaged areas.

None of these tools replaces careful management, but each one removes a common source of stress.
