The Ashlands update for Valheim landed with plenty of new content and one annoying side effect: a flood of reports about worlds crashing during load. If your save sits frozen, kicks you to desktop, or throws an error every time you try to enter it, you are not alone. Below are the fixes that have actually moved the needle for players so far.

None of the steps here are official patches. They are workarounds the community has stress-tested while we wait for Iron Gate Studio to push a proper hotfix. Run through them in order and stop at the one that works for your setup.
This sounds boring, but it is the single fix that resolves the most cases. The Ashlands biome injects a large amount of new terrain and asset data into existing saves, and the first load after updating can take far longer than usual. Players on Reddit have reported wait times of around ten minutes on older or larger worlds.
While the loading screen is up, leave the game alone. Do not alt-tab, click around, or open anything that might steal focus. Interrupting the process is one of the easiest ways to turn a slow load into a hard crash.
If you are running a modded install, that is the second place to look. The community pooled notes on the mods that break Ashlands and several common ones are confirmed culprits at the time of writing:
Pull those mods out, try loading the world, and re-add them later as their authors push compatibility patches. Keep an eye on each mod's page for updates rather than reinstalling blindly.
A second batch of reports points the finger at the in-game console. Some players confirmed that servers and singleplayer worlds crash instantly while the `-console` launch option is enabled.
To disable it:
The trade-off is obvious: no more console commands until a fix arrives. For most players that is a small price compared to losing access to a world entirely.
If nothing above helps, a fresh install can clear corrupted files left behind by the update. Before you uninstall, back up your save folder. By default it lives at `%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim`. Copy `worlds_local` and `characters_local` somewhere safe, otherwise a wipe can take your viking and your maps with it.
Once the backup is secure, uninstall Valheim through Steam, optionally remove the leftover folder, and reinstall the game. Restore your saves into the same path and try loading the world again.
If the crash still happens after all four steps, the issue is most likely on Iron Gate's side. Keep an eye on the official patch notes and community threads for a confirmed hotfix.
