Windrose Walkthrough: Cracking the 15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest Quest

Other Games·April 16, 2026·7 min read

Windrose hides plenty of lore behind its question marks, and the very first one near spawn happens to kick off the treasure hunt that earns the game its pirate stripes. Here is how to finish the 15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest quest without dying to skeletons, drowning to ambushes, or wandering the island looking for a shovel recipe.

Where the Quest Begins

Every procedurally generated map drops one "?" marker on the coastline. Walk the shore until you find a dead captain slumped against a lifeboat, with a battered chest beside them. The location is never far from spawn, so following the beach in either direction usually does the trick.

Opening the chest reveals a note. Picking it up officially starts the quest and adds a new marker to your map.

Reading the Note and Finding the X

The captain's letter explains, in the bleakest terms possible, why his loot is now your problem. A new objective points inland to the burial site.

When you arrive, four skeletons form an "X" on the ground. The treasure sits right under the intersection. That is the easy part. Digging it up requires a shovel you do not have yet.

Getting Copper and Building a Shovel

A shovel needs copper bars, which means visiting one of the cave "?" markers on the starter island. Craft a pickaxe at the crafting bench, head into the cave, and mine until you have enough ore.

Picking up copper ore unlocks the furnace and charcoal kiln recipes. Both need stone and clay. Clay is not flagged on the map, but it shows up across the starter island as patches of bare, rough dirt with no grass on top. Once you have everything, return to camp, smelt three copper bars, and craft the shovel at the bench.

The Fight at the X

Before walking back to the marker, eat something and craft a few bandages. This part is not a quiet dig.

Use the shovel on the spot between the skeletons. When you try to open the buried chest, four drowned spawn around it. Defeat all four without going down, otherwise the loot stays sealed.

Claiming the Reward

Once the drowned are back where they belong, the chest opens up and pays out in silver and gold.

Hold onto the shovel after this. Windrose is packed with buried caches scattered across later islands, and pirates are not exactly known for picking new hobbies.
