The 5 Most Played Garry's Mod Game Modes Right Now

Garry's Mod·January 13, 2024·6 min read

Garry's Mod is almost twenty years old and the player count still refuses to read the room. The community keeps pumping out servers, mods and entirely new genres on top of the same Source engine sandbox. If you are looking for where the action is right now, these are the five game modes with the healthiest populations and what you can expect when you connect.

5. Zombie Survival

Zombie Survival borrows assets from Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike Source to build a wave-based shooter where the undead are not bots. Other players take the role of the horde, so every round feels different depending on who is hunting you. Earn in-game currency between rounds to upgrade weapons, stock ammo and reinforce positions before the next push.

4. Trouble in Terrorist Town

TTT is the social deduction classic of the Source scene. You drop into a Counter-Strike Source map with a group of terrorists, and up to four of them are secretly traitors. Innocents and detectives have to figure out who is on their side before the body count climbs. Equal parts deduction game and twitch shooter, with plenty of room for paranoia.

3. Sandbox

Sandbox is the default mode and the reason Garry's Mod exists in the first place. There is no objective, no scoreboard and no win condition. Spawn cars and improvise a derby, build a base, fight an NPC army, or test what happens when you weld three hundred barrels to a rocket. Whatever sounds funny at the time tends to work.

2. StarWarsRP

If you have ever wanted to clock in as a Jedi, Sith or clone trooper, StarWarsRP servers cover the entire timeline. Pick an era of Star Wars you actually care about, then find a server that leans into the part of the roleplay you enjoy, whether that is military drills, council politics or lightsaber duels in the training room.

1. DarkRP

DarkRP holds the top spot and probably has for longer than most of its players have been online. The premise is simple: a city, a job system, and a hierarchy you climb as a citizen, criminal or police officer. Some servers play it serious, others let the chaos cook, but the loop of grinding a job and getting harassed by a cop with a printer warrant is the part that keeps people logging back in.

Plenty More Where That Came From

These five may be carrying the most active populations, but Garry's Mod has hundreds of game modes in active rotation. Prop Hunt was born here. Murder, Deathrun and dozens of niche RP variants are still running their own healthy lobbies. The next viral mode is probably half-built on someone's server right now, so if none of these fit, the engine is waiting.
