Mutations are the closest thing The Isle has to a build system. They tweak a dinosaur's stats and behavior, sometimes shaving damage off a bigger predator's bite, sometimes letting your dino drink seawater without keeling over. Picking the right ones turns survival into something resembling actual strategy.

This guide breaks down every mutation currently in the game, who can take it, what it does, and how to unlock the gated ones.

How Mutations Work

Most mutations are passive buffs. Faster stamina recovery, better senses, reduced damage from larger species, that sort of thing. A handful require specific feats before they show up as options, like cannibalizing your own kind or jumping fifty times in a row for no apparent reason.

You get your first mutation slot when your dinosaur hits the juvenile stage. The second unlocks at sub-adult, and the third at full adult. Hatchlings can also inherit mutations from their parents, so breeding choices carry weight beyond just population numbers.

Diet-Locked Mutations

Some traits are tied to what your dino eats. Carnivores get a different pool than herbivores, and the game enforces it strictly.

Carnivore-Only

  • Accelerated Prey Drive: 10% extra damage against low-health targets.
  • Hematophagy: Eating corpses restores 15% thirst.
  • Hemomania: 5% bonus damage to bleeding enemies.
  • Hypermetabolic Inanition: Damage scales up as your own health drops.

Herbivore-Only

  • Barometric Sensitivity: Get a heads-up before storms and droughts roll in.
  • Hypervigilance: Camera angle widens 50% while eating or drinking. Other dinos' footsteps also get louder.
  • Photosynthetic Regeneration: Stamina regenerates 10% faster during daylight.
  • Truculency: 5% better chance of bucking off latched attackers.
  • Xerocole Adaptation: Gain 15% thirst whenever you eat plants.

Universal Lifecycle Mutations

These are open to every dinosaur regardless of diet.

  • Cellular Regeneration: Health regenerates 15% faster.
  • Congenital Hypoalgesia: 15% damage reduction when fighting larger species.
  • Efficient Digestion: Food drains 20% slower.
  • Enlarged Meniscus: Fall damage chips away at stamina before it touches health.
  • Epidermal Fibrosis: 15% bleed resistance.
  • Featherweight: Your footprints fade 50% faster.
  • Hydrodynamic: 15% faster swimming.
  • Hydro-regenerative: Health regenerates 25% faster in rainy weather.
  • Increased Inspiratory Capacity: 15% more oxygen capacity.
  • Infrasound Communication: Chat voice volume drops 50%.
  • Nocturnal: 5% faster health (or locked health) recovery and movement speed at night.
  • Osteosclerosis: 20% chance to resist or reduce fracture damage.
  • Photosynthetic Tissue: 5% faster health (or locked health) recovery and movement speed during the day.
  • Reabsorption: Slow thirst recovery while raining or while swimming in drinkable water.
  • Submerged Optical Retention: 5% wider underwater vision.
  • Sustained Hydration: 20% slower thirst drain.
  • Wader: 25% less slowdown in shallow water.
  • Traumatic Thrombosis: Resting prevents death from bleed-out.
  • Gastronomic Regeneration: Eating tops off a small chunk of health.
  • Advanced Digestion (Female only): 50% faster egg gestation, incubation, and cooldown.
  • Social Behavior (Group Leader only): Larger group size cap. Buffed in Patch 0.17.54.

Unlockable Mutations

These are not on the menu by default. You earn them by hitting specific in-game conditions.

Augmented Tapetum

  • Restriction: Carnivore
  • Effect: Better night vision.
  • Unlock: Kill 4 to 12 players after dark.

Cannibalistic

  • Restriction: Carnivore
  • Effect: Adds your own species to the list of preferred prey for nutrient purposes. Only relevant for species that are not cannibals by default.
  • Unlock: Eat your own kind.

Enhanced Digestion

  • Restriction: None
  • Effect: Nutrition decays slower.
  • Unlock: Keep your diet rating at "good" or better for at least 60% of your growth.

Heightened Grelin

  • Restriction: None
  • Effect: Big boost to overeating capacity.
  • Unlock: Maintain a blinking full stomach for at least 9 minutes.

Multichambered Lungs

  • Restriction: None
  • Effect: Lower threshold before stamina starts regenerating.
  • Unlock: Burn through 6 to 8 stamina bars by sprinting or fast-swimming.

Osteophagic

  • Restriction: Carnivore
  • Effect: Lets you eat bones, which speeds up fracture recovery.
  • Unlock: Eat bones.

Prolific Reproduction

  • Restriction: Female only
  • Effect: Offspring get more health and stamina regen, need less food, and grow faster.
  • Unlock: Successfully raise at least five offspring to the Juvie stage.

Reinforced Tendons

  • Restriction: None
  • Effect: Jumping costs less stamina.
  • Unlock: Jump 50 times.

Reniculate Kidneys

  • Restriction: None
  • Effect: Saltwater becomes drinkable.
  • Unlock: Keep drinking saltwater until the "Fluid Deficient" debuff goes away.

Picking Your Build

Mutation choices are permanent for the current life, so commit deliberately. Carnivores hunting in packs tend to stack bleed and prey-drive buffs. Solo herbivores lean into Hypervigilance and Photosynthetic Regeneration for awareness and recovery. The universal pool is where most defensive picks live, and anything that reduces damage from larger species is rarely a bad call when half the map wants you dead.
