Growing Up in The Isle: A Practical Guide to Diet, Nutrients, and Fast Leveling

Other Games·March 29, 2024·15 min read

Pulling off a successful hunt or finding decent food in The Isle is rough while you're still a juvie. Predators treat you like a snack, herbivores ignore you, and your growth bar moves like dial-up internet. The faster you reach adulthood, the faster you stop being optional prey.

This guide covers how growth actually works in The Isle, which nutrients matter, and the diet combinations that turn a juvenile into an adult worth fearing.

How Growth Works in The Isle

Growth only exists by default on the Evrima Branch. The Legacy version was never built around the maturation system, so creatures spawn fully grown unless a server admin enables the option. If you're playing on a Legacy server and nothing is growing, that's why.

On Evrima, every dinosaur runs on the Diet and Subsistence System. Each species has nutritional needs, and meeting them is what fills the growth bar. Skip meals and you stay tiny. Eat well and you size up.

Reading Your Dinosaur's Stats

Press Tab to open the status overlay. Two sections matter here:

  • Status Report: shows current condition, hunger, hydration, and overall nutrient state.
  • Preferred Food: lists what your species likes to eat and the rough biome where that food spawns. A carnivore, for example, will see prey markers like boars or deer.

Below the Preferred Food block is the Growth bar. Fill it and your dinosaur evolves to the next life stage. The system was introduced in Update #4 and has been the standard ever since.

Finding food is less painful thanks to Scent. Hold Q to switch on smell vision and follow the trail to the source.

The Three Nutrient Types

Every food source in The Isle slots into one of three categories. The in-game icons are unusual, so it helps to memorize them:

  • S = Protein
  • // = Lipids
  • = Carbohydrates

Different species prefer different mixes. Carnivores tend to have a wider menu and are gentler for newer players. Herbivores have to work harder for their meals, which suits people who already know the map.

A Word on Cannibalism

You can eat your own species. The game lets you. It also punishes you for it: heavy nutrient loss, loss of control over your character, vomiting, and temporary infertility. The cost almost never justifies the meal.

Diet Combinations and Buffs

The real secret to fast growth is mixing nutrients. Eat a three-part meal of Protein, Lipids, and Carbohydrates, and the game grants a +50% growth rate bonus, which is the strongest buff currently available.

Here are the main combinations and what each one provides:

  • ∴, S, //: Growth Rate +50%
  • ∴, ∴, ∴: Growth Rate +15%, Sprint/Swim Cost reduced 25%
  • ∴, ∴, //: Growth Rate +30%, Scent/NV Range +10%, Stamina Decay reduced 15%, Sprint/Swim Cost reduced 15%
  • ∴, ∴, S: Growth Rate +30%, Health Regen +10%, Sprint/Swim Cost reduced 15%, Fracture Resist +10%
  • //, //, //: Growth Rate +15%, Scent/NV Range +25%
  • //, //, ∴: Growth Rate +30%, Sprint/Swim Cost reduced 10%, Scent/NV Range +15%, Blood Regen +10%
  • //, //, S: Growth Rate +30%, Health Regen +10%, Scent/NV Range +15%, Bleed Resist +10%
  • S, S, S: Growth Rate +15%, Health/Locked Health Regen +25%
  • S, S, ∴: Growth Rate +30%, Health Regen +15%, Fracture Regen +10%, Sprint/Swim Cost reduced 10%
  • S, S, //: Growth Rate +30%, Health Regen +15%, Scent/NV Range +10%, Egg Incubation +10%

Where Each Nutrient Hides

Different body parts on a corpse hold different nutrients. A quick reference:

  • Intestines carry Lipids (//)
  • Lungs carry Carbohydrates (∴)
  • Heart carries Protein (S)
  • Stomach yields the highest percentage, but the nutrient type depends on whatever the prey had been eating

So if a deer had been grazing on plants, its stomach tilts toward Carbohydrates. Pay attention to what your target was last seen near.

What Happens If You Skip Meals

Malnutrition is more than a missed buff. It triggers debuffs that include growth rate reduced 75% and infertility. Progression basically stops until food shows up again.

How to Level Up Faster

If you remember nothing else from this guide, remember the combo: ∴, S, //. Carbohydrates, Protein, Lipids. That is the +50% growth ceiling, and nothing in the current game beats it.

A few habits make a real difference:

  • Rotate hunting grounds so you keep hitting different nutrient profiles instead of grinding the same prey
  • Rest between trips. Hunger and fullness both have to be managed, and overeating wastes resources
  • Don't burn stamina sprinting when walking will do
  • Skip the cannibalism

Running The Isle on a dedicated server keeps growth sessions stable and disconnect-free, which matters when your growth bar is half full and a crash could undo hours of feeding. If you haven't set one up yet, you can launch a HolyHosting The Isle server in a few clicks, and the support team is around if anything strange comes up.
