Smalland Taming Guide: Every Tamable Critter and How to Win It Over

Other Games·April 7, 2023·8 min read

Smalland drops you into a world where ants are bigger than you and a friendly beetle counts as transportation. Some of the wild creatures roaming the underbrush will let you tame them, which gives you a pet, a useful perk, and a slightly less terrifying commute through the tall grass. Below is a clean rundown of how taming works, every animal you can recruit, and the small habits that keep your new buddy loyal.

How Taming Works

The process is short, but you cannot improvise it. Each tamable creature has its own recipe, and you must craft that specific item before approaching the animal. Once your pockets are stocked, the steps look like this:

  1. Hit the creature until its health drops to 50 percent or lower.
  2. With the right treat ready, press F to tame it.

If the animal stops attacking, you did it. Ladybugs are the odd ones out: they stay calm even while you damage them and only stop fleeing once the tame is done, so do not assume the recipe failed just because nothing visibly changed mid combat.

Every Tamable Animal and Its Recipe

At the time of writing, only a handful of critters can be tamed, and each one needs its own treat or kit. Materials come mostly from defeated bugs and harvested plants.

  • Damselfly Treat: 3 Firefly Juice, 2 Seed Oil, 1 Petal
  • Gecko Treat: 2 Ant Heads, 2 Bee Heads, 2 Seed Oil, 1 Petal
  • Grasshopper Treat: 3 Insect Eggs, 2 Seed Oil, 1 Petal
  • Ladybug Travel Kit: 3 Edible Mushrooms, 5 Fiber, 2 Nectar
  • Wolf Spider Treat: 3 Insect Wings, 2 Seed Oil, 2 Spider Eyes, 1 Grasshopper Leg, 1 Petal

Each pet brings something useful beyond company. A ladybug works as extra inventory space. A gecko's sticky feet let it climb vertical surfaces, turning cliffs and tree bark into shortcuts. Grasshoppers and damselflies help you cover ground quickly, and wolf spiders are the closest thing the game offers to a war mount.

Tips That Keep Your Pet Alive

Taming is easy. Keeping the pet useful and breathing is where most players slip. A few things worth knowing:

  • You can only have one active pet at a time. Switching means releasing or killing the current one.
  • Pets flee when outmatched. A gecko will run off if your opponent looks tougher than you, which it often does.
  • Erratic movement makes pets nervous. Watch for irritation cues and slow down before they bolt for good.
  • Lost track of your buddy? Use the pet whistle and they come scurrying back to your side.
  • Pets can die. Toss food to heal them in a pinch, and remember that even your tamed creatures are not immortal.

Stick to the recipes, watch your pet's mood, and Smalland turns into a much friendlier place to explore.
