Smalland Gecko Taming Guide: Recipe, Steps and Combat Uses

Other Games·September 25, 2023·9 min read

Wandering Smalland alone gets old fast, and the other Smallfolk are not always great company either. The good news is that the world is packed with creatures you can recruit as travel buddies, and the Gecko sits near the top of the list. Here is the full process for taming one without stumbling through trial and error.

Unlocking the Gecko Treat Recipe

Before you can tame anything with scales, you have to earn the right to try. That means defeating the Rhino Beetle and then paying a visit to Skadi, who lives in a small hut tucked between the Beach and the Oak Forest. Once she hears about your win, she will hand over the recipe for the Gecko Treat, the bait you need to make a Gecko consider you a friend instead of lunch.

Crafting the Gecko Treat

The Treat is built at a Cauldron and uses four ingredients:

  • 2x Ant Head
  • 2x Bee Head
  • 1x Petal
  • 2x Seed Oil

Most of those drop from routine combat or harvesting. Bull Ants give up Ant Heads, Bees yield Bee Heads when killed, and flowers such as Poppies provide Petals when chopped down.

Seed Oil is the part that trips up most players, because it requires a Stonecutter. If you do not have one yet, here is the build cost:

  • 10x Stone
  • 1x Bottlecap
  • 1x Screw
  • 10x Wood

Place the Stonecutter, interact with it, and turn 1x Seeds into 1x Seed Oil. Repeat until you have the two units the recipe calls for.

Finding and Taming the Gecko

Geckos roam several areas, but the most reliable spot is east of the Rhino Beetle arena. Once you spot one, attack it until its health drops below 50%. With a Gecko Treat in your inventory, a Tame prompt appears at low health. Press F and the lizard is officially yours.

A quick note worth remembering: as of Patch #5, you are no longer limited to a single tamed creature, so this Gecko does not have to replace anything you already have on staff.

What a Tamed Gecko Brings to the Table

The Gecko is more than just a ride. It comes with a respectable health pool and hits hard in fights, especially against Green Beetles, which it tears through quickly. It also climbs diagonal surfaces faster than other mounts, which makes vertical exploration much less painful.

Since the Forbidden Monuments update, tamed Geckos also gain experience when you take them on adventures, so the more you travel together, the stronger your scaly companion gets.
