Stardew Valley Truffle Oil Guide: Crafting, Pricing, and Gifting

Other Games·June 1, 2023·12 min read

Running a farm in Stardew Valley eventually comes down to one thing: cash flow. Crops pay the bills early, but artisan goods are where the real margins hide. Among the top earners sits truffle oil, a late-game product that flips a foraged fungus into one of the most reliable gold-per-item drops in the game.

What You Actually Need

Two things must come together to produce truffle oil. First, the raw input, truffles. Second, the machine that turns them into oil, called the Oil Maker. Neither shows up by accident, so plan ahead.

Step 1: Getting Pigs to Dig Up Truffles

Truffles do not grow on trees. They are dug up by pigs, and the only way to get pigs digging is to let them roam outside the Deluxe Barn during the day. As long as a pig is out, there is a chance it will leave a truffle on a farm tile. More pigs out means more potential drops.

A couple of details to keep in mind:

  • Pigs refuse to leave the barn during winter, so production stops cold for the season.
  • The amount that actually spawns also depends on luck and free farm space.

If you do not want to wait on your herd, the Traveling Cart sometimes stocks truffles for 1,875 to 3,125 gold. Her inventory is random. The cart parks in Cindersap Forest south of the farm on Fridays and Sundays, from 6 AM to 8 PM, and also appears at the Night Market from Winter 15 to 17.

Step 2: Building the Oil Maker

The recipe unlocks at Farming Level 8. Once it appears in your crafting menu, you will need:

  • 50 Slime
  • 20 Hardwood
  • 1 Gold Bar

A quick rundown on each input:

  • Slime drops from slime enemies in the Mines, or from a Slime Hutch if you already own one.
  • Hardwood comes from mahogany trees, large stumps, and large logs. A copper axe handles stumps, a steel axe handles logs. The Lumberjack profession also lets regular trees drop it occasionally.
  • Gold Bar takes 5 Gold Ore plus coal in a furnace. If you have the Blacksmith profession, you can also transmute 2 Iron Bars.

Drop a truffle into the finished Oil Maker and you get a bottle of truffle oil roughly six in-game hours later.

How Much Does Truffle Oil Sell For

A single bottle sells for 1,065 to 1,491 gold, depending on quality and profession bonuses. With a full herd running through spring, summer, and fall, the math gets very friendly.

Gifting: Who Loves It, Who Will Resent You

Truffle oil is a loved gift for Harvey. A bottle on his birthday is basically a free friendship boost.

Stay away from Jas, Sebastian, and Vincent. All three hate it, and handing them a bottle will drag your relationship down faster than ignoring their birthdays.

Other Uses

Beyond selling and gifting, truffle oil shows up in two specific recipes:

  • It is an ingredient for the Rain Totem, which forces rain the following day.
  • It can be loaded into the Sewing Machine to create the Dark Bandana Shirt, added in version 1.4.

Keep the pig pipeline running through every non-winter season and truffle oil quickly becomes one of the best returns on effort in the entire game.
