Shane is one of the more layered villagers you can befriend in Stardew Valley. He greets the player with sarcasm, insults, and zero patience, which makes most farmers write him off immediately. Push past those first conversations and a much more interesting character emerges, alongside recipes and scenes you cannot get from anyone else.
This guide covers his favourite presents, the items that will tank your friendship in record time, and the order of his Heart Events.

Shane joined the cast back in version 1.0, so there is no quest, item, or unlock condition standing between you and him. He lives at Marnie's Ranch and works at JojaMart, which probably explains part of the attitude.
While your friendship sits at zero hearts, his dialogue is mostly dismissive remarks and short replies. As that number climbs, the conversations open up and reveal that Shane is dealing with depression and a drinking problem. The writing handles those topics with more weight than most farming sims attempt, which is part of why he became such a popular romance and friend option.
Like every villager in Stardew Valley, Shane reacts to presents based on a hidden table of preferences. You can hand him two gifts per week, plus a bonus gift on his birthday on Spring 20 that counts for eight times the usual friendship value.
His on-screen reaction tells you exactly how much progress you just made:
These are the heavy hitters. Save them for week-by-week farming until he is your best friend in the valley.
Nothing here is a relationship-killer, but you are wasting a weekly slot if you hand any of these over.
Avoid these unless you genuinely want to lose progress.

Once your friendship climbs above zero, Shane will also start sending presents in the mail at random intervals. The bigger payoff, though, is the chain of Heart Events that unlock at fixed friendship thresholds. The triggers are at 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10 hearts, with a final 14-heart event reserved for after marriage.
Walk into Cindersap Forest between 8 PM and 12 AM. Shane will be sitting on the dock by the pond and will offer you a beer. The event does not change your friendship value, but you leave with the Tipsy buff, plus 22 Health and 50 Energy restored.
No travel required. The Pepper Poppers recipe lands in your mailbox, and Shane's dialogue noticeably softens from this point onward.
Visit Marnie's Ranch at any time of day. You will find Shane passed out on the ground. Use your Watering Can on him to wake him up and let the scene play out. Friendship is unaffected.
Return to Cindersap Forest during the day, between 9 AM and 8 PM, on a day with rain or a storm. Shane will pose two sets of questions. The first set is purely flavour, but the second set actually moves the friendship needle:
This is the most emotionally heavy moment in the entire chain, so pick your reply carefully.
Shane has three separate seven-heart moments.
Head to Marnie's Ranch while Shane is home. You will catch him in a much better mood. Nothing affects friendship here, it is just a payoff scene.
Two conditions, both on the same day:
Talk to Shane and respond however you want. None of the answers change the friendship score, so just pick what feels right for your save.
If you want to speed-run Shane's storyline, plant a few Hot Peppers in summer and stockpile Pepper Poppers in the kitchen. Two loved gifts a week, his birthday bonus on Spring 20, and consistent dialogue every day will carry you through every Heart Event well before the second in-game year is over.
