Befriending Sebastian in Stardew Valley: Gift Preferences and Heart Events

Other Games·June 5, 2023·15 min read

Sebastian sits in a basement, codes a lot, and rarely speaks first. If you have decided that this brooding programmer is the person you want to romance (or at least befriend) in Stardew Valley, this guide covers his favorite gifts, the items that will earn you a glare, and every Heart Event you can unlock along the way.

Who Is Sebastian?

Sebastian was added to the game through developer update #12. He lives in the basement of the carpenter's house alongside his mother Robin, his stepfather Demetrius, and his half-sister Maru. Most of his time goes into solo hobbies, freelance work, and the occasional smoke break outside.

When you first arrive in Pelican Town, expect him to keep his distance. He is not rude on purpose. He simply does not see the value of small talk with someone he barely knows. Regular visits, the right gifts, and a little patience reveal a much warmer and quietly funny side of him.

How the Gift System Works

You can hand Sebastian up to two presents per week, plus an additional gift on his birthday, which falls on Winter 10. His reaction tells you exactly where you stand:

  • Love: "I really love this. How did you know?"
  • Like: "Thanks, I like this."
  • Neutral: "...thanks."
  • Dislike: "...?"
  • Hate: "...I hate this."

Birthday gifts count for eight times the normal friendship value, so save one of his loved items for Winter 10 if you can plan ahead.

Loved Gifts

  • Frozen Tear
  • Obsidian
  • Pumpkin Soup
  • Sashimi
  • Void Egg

Liked Gifts

  • Flounder
  • Quartz

Neutral Gifts

  • Any fruit except Salmonberry and Fruit Tree Fruit
  • Any fish except Carp, Flounder, and Snail
  • Any kind of Milk

Disliked Gifts

  • Chanterelle
  • Common Mushroom
  • Daffodil
  • Dandelion
  • Ginger
  • Hazelnut
  • Holly
  • Leek
  • Magma Cap
  • Morel
  • Purple Mushroom
  • Salmonberry
  • Snow Yam
  • Wild Horseradish
  • Winter Root

Hated Gifts

  • Clay
  • Complete Breakfast
  • Farmer's Lunch
  • Omelet
  • Pina Colada
  • Every type of Egg except Void Egg
  • Every artisan good except Coffee, Oil, and Green Tea

If you are still in your first spring and short on resources, Quartz is the easiest reliable pick. A handful of early mine runs will give you enough to drop one off every week without breaking a sweat. Frozen Tear also becomes farmable later through the Mines, and Pumpkin Soup is a strong long-term option once you cook regularly.

Sebastian's Heart Events

Heart Events trigger at two, four, six, eight, ten, and fourteen hearts. The fourteen-heart scene is locked behind marriage, so for most players the ten-heart event is the romantic finish line on the first run.

Two Hearts

Enter Sebastian's room while he is inside. You will find him at his computer. The game offers a choice between staying or leaving, but neither response affects friendship. He apologizes for being absorbed in his screen and then asks a few personal questions. Pick whatever feels natural since your answers are not scored.

Four Hearts

Locate him in the Mountain area between 11 AM and 5 PM. He will be tinkering with his motorcycle outside the carpenter's shop. There are no dialog choices and no impact on hearts. The scene exists to flesh out his character.

Six Hearts

Visit his room again with him present. This time he is running a tabletop role-playing session with Sam, and he invites you to join. None of the choices change your friendship value, but certain answers produce a "perfect" outcome that completionists tend to chase. Supporting the party generally beats mocking it.

Eight Hearts

Head to the beach on a rainy day between noon and 11 PM. Walk to the end of the boardwalk and the scene starts automatically. There is nothing to pick here. Just let it play out.

Ten Hearts

Travel to the Mountain between 8 PM and midnight. Sebastian will be outside his house and will offer you a ride on his motorcycle. The scene ends with him being honest about how he feels, which also unlocks his eligibility for marriage once you hand him a bouquet.

Quick Recap

Two weekly gifts, one birthday present on Winter 10, and a focus on his five loved items will push the friendship bar quickly. Steer clear of his long disliked list, keep a stack of Quartz or Frozen Tears ready, and you will be exchanging vows before the second winter arrives.
